"C'mon, Lani! You have to come!" My best friend, Leilani, complains

"C'mon, Lani! You have to come!" My best friend, Leilani, complains. Her pout made me roll my eyes and chuckle at her attempt at a tantrum.

Shaking my head, "No, the answer will always be no," I say.

"It's one party, bro. You seriously can't go because you need to study?" Complaining was always Leilani's favorite thing to do to annoy people. But I've known this drama queen most of our lives and this will not be the first that she's done this resulting in me being adamant; with puppy-eyes and all.

"And this one party will result in my being the mom-friend to everyone and I hated doing that the last time. John, Kennedy, Ryan, they all agreed with me when I complained the last time about taking care of your drunk asses."

John, my next door neighbor in my cheap (though still expensive) apartment in downtown Honolulu.

When I moved back down here from Las Vegas—my parents moved up to the mainland after we were losing money from the million dollar one-story, two bedroom, two bath house that wasn't worth living in. So, we moved, got a better house—two story, four bedroom, three bath, and a huge backyard that I worked my ass off in during high school girls basketball season.

(My dad and I would work out back in the lawn. Either me running back-and-forth from fence-to-fence, trying to keep my cardio up during the off-season and before AAU started or lifting weights from amazon that he'd bought or old, rusted, outdated machines that were ditched to the side of the road.

I hated doing it, ending up where I am. A young woman with a fit body living in paradise, one that I've missed since moving up to the mainland. I get to see my family again.)

John was a talk black man with a strong built body that many women would fawn over. Unlucky for them, the man is gay. Gayer then even I thought gay men could go. Happy for him, as always, he's planning on proposing to his boyfriend, Ryan who lives with him.

Ryan, the white man that I never thought was straight at first sight. I introduced John and Ryan my sophomore year in college, now I'm a senior about to get my Masters in Literature and bachelors in Communications.

Kennedy, the asian woman that I was best friends with up in Vegas. We came down to Oahu after we both got into UH Manoa. (University of Hawai'i, Manoa.) We'd planned on coming down here, me wanting to be close to my family again and her to be in a place that has only one season all year—while also getting her degree.

Now, Leilani, that one I have absolutely no explanation for. She's so loose in her head I don't even know who she is half the time. But I've committed to her since young days, pretty much since pre-school. We went to the same school on the east coast of the island, Kaneohe, attending Rainbow school before moving to Elementary and then on. We grew up together, and when I left we kept in touch, calling each other at least twice every week.
