"I'm just so damn relieved that you two got here when you did yesterday," Jane said into the phone. "I can't imagine what would've happened if you didn't."
"Really? You couldn't imagine?" Benji scoffed in response. "With the looks of George's face when we came in, I'd say it's pretty clear what would've happened... something in the fucking-up-Flint department."
Jane couldn't stop a small smile from touching her lips. She shifted to rest her chin in her hand while she heard Benji continue talking.
"So, you didn't think to tell me that you and boy toy were back to talking, huh?"
Jane chewed her bottom lip with guilt. "I... well, to be honest, I... thought you'd be mad at me."
"Mad at you?" Benji laughed. "Look, Janey... I could never be mad at you. I've only been truly angry with you two times in my life, once-"
"-When I got Firewhiskey on your new boutique blouse and when I forgot my lines as your wing-woman for hooking up with Brian Ramirez, yeah, I know," Jane sighed.
"So you know that I wouldn't be mad at you," he continued. "I just... I guess I was a bit worried, or skeptical, wondering if he was truly a good guy or not after the whole Flint thing-"
"And he is, I promise," Jane assured him quickly.
"Oh, I know he is," Benji said. "You know why?"
Jane hesitated. "Why?"
"Because he was standing in front of you when we walked in," he said. "Because he was between you and Flint, and he was reaching back to hold you, too."
Jane was smiling again.
"That's how I know," he said. "That's how I know that he's better than Flint because Flint was such a piece of trash to you that anyone who can show you basic decency is a step up. A huge step up. And I guess George sort of, um... redeemed himself, for me? I mean, well, he did kinda lead you on, and he kissed you that night after the bar, right, when he was still with-"
"He broke up with Angelina," Jane blurted out.
There was a pause on the line.
"What?"
"He broke up with Angelina," she repeated, and now the words were tumbling out: "I found out when I came back, I found out he dumped her only a few days after she came home, and he was asking about me while I was away, and then that night after the bar when he kissed me, and you called and I told you about it, I forgot to mention that he broke up with her already. And then the next day we hooked up."
The silence that hung on the phone line was almost deafening.
"WHAT?!"
"Benji, I know, I know, I-"
"AND YOU DIDN'T THINK TO MENTION THIS?! YOU STUPID, INFURIATING BITCH!"
"Hey!"
"I'M NOT MAD AT YOU, OKAY?!"
"Then why are you yelling?"
"I DON'T KNOW!"
"You don't know-?"
"I'M- I'M IN SHOCK, AND I'M TRYING TO PROCESS THINGS, AND I- I STARTED YELLING AND NOW I CAN'T STOP!"
"You're gonna piss off your apartment complex neighbors-"
