. . .
Monday Morning
The clock above Mr Morris' desk was ticking impossibly slow, you were convinced he slowed the second's hand down somehow. Was this free period going by so slowly because it was the first thing on a Monday morning? Or was it because Amelia was talking about the newest man in her life? You tried your best to say enough social cues to be considered a part of the conversation, not that she would have noticed anyway.
"He's one of the rugby lads, I think I'm going to go to his match this weekend." Amelia showed you yet another picture of the guy, you couldn't lie and pretend that you remembered his name, he was attractive and looked a little familiar.
"Isn't he in our biology class?"
"Yeah! He's really smart too." She bit her lip while looking at his Instagram, a shirtless picture of him was on the screen, and you abruptly turned your attention back to your English homework. Multiple times a day you found yourself pondering why you were still friends, beyond the fact that you've known each other for four years, you had almost nothing in common, and any moment you get to spend apart was such a relief for you.
"Can I borrow your notes for English today?" Amelia asked, already reaching to slide the book to herself before you had a chance to agree.
You stopped yourself from rolling your eyes, "Yeah, go ahead."
"Thank yooou!" She punctuated her sentence with the snap of her bubble gum. You prayed that Mr Morris would notice and tell her off.
. . .
You waited outside the chemistry class with the rest of your friends, Jen, Faith, and Lia. Amelia was included but was glued to her phone not really taking part in the conversations going on around her.
"I think we're doing a practical today, Miss Thomas said last week that we needed to do the squeaky pop test," Lia said, checking her planner for her notes.
"I thought we were banned from doing practicals since Mark set fire to the bunsen burner clamp a couple of weeks ago?" Jen questioned.
Lia snorted, "Oh god I forgot about that. I don't think she can legally ban us all from practicals, we need to try them before the exam –"
You all quietened down as Miss Thomas' heels clicked towards the classroom, "Alright year twelve! Single file now please!" She had an edge to her voice that told you exactly how today was going to go. You could smell a strong waft of coffee as she walked past you.
"We will be doing a practical today as you need to understand how these experiments work in case they show up in your exams. But," she raised her voice, quieting the soft mumbles that had formed. "I'm organising a new seating plan. And I don't want to hear your complaints year twelve!"
She rustled her keys and unlocked the door, "When I call out your names, I want you to sit in the first available seat on the benches. Once the bench is full start the next row. First up, Lucy and Will take the first seats." The two shuffled into the class, the stool legs scraped against the floor as they got comfortable.
Miss Thomas continued firing off the list. "Mark and Faith, I want you sat in front of my desk since your last accident." She quickly shushed Mark's objections and pointed sternly into the class.
"Dean and George. . . Steph and June. . . Yunho and Tina." Your ears perked up at Yunho's name, realising it was the same name from Amelia had said earlier that morning. She pursed her lips, a slight glare evident on her face as she watched Yunho beam at his new lab partner, crushing her hopes of getting to be closer to him. He definitely dodged a bullet.
