CHAPTER ONE
So, he speaks?
CARA
"HEY! WHERE ARE YOU!" I yell running through the corn field that's possibly eight feet tall and never ending. Even though it was way too tall to see anything around me, I stop for a moment to catch my breath before I try to jump to see if I can find the boy in the light green polo shirt that I was just with. I take a deep breath and jump with all the strength in my body. I leave the ground and somehow, I end up jumping so high that I can see over the corn field. Everything slows down as if it was going in slow motion, I look around the corn field to try and find the boy. I can't see the boy I am looking for, but I hear laughter behind me. I turn around and see something moving in the field. And just like that I fall back down.
The daylight shining through the window makes it harder to open my eyes. But when I do, I recognize where I am. I'm in my childhood bedroom, the bedroom I've had for the past thirteen years, the one I was given by my parents when we moved across the country when I was two years old. When I notice how heavy I'm my breathing is, I try to relax to slow my breathing down. After clearing my head, I finally realize that it was all just a dream. It was never real, for some reason I'm disappointed, disappointed that it was a dream, that it was all in my head.
I get out of bed and throw my hair up in a messy bun. I grab the glass of water on my nightstand and start drinking it as I make my way to the other side of the room to my desk. I always keep my phone on my desk at night because when I was little and first got my phone my parents made me leave it there at night, and I've done it ever since, I guess it's become a habit.
I pick up my phone and I see the time. It is 10:47am. IT IS 10:47AM!
"SHIT, SHIT, SHIT, SHIT, SHIT! School started over an hour ago" I say out loud to myself.
How can I be so stupid and let this happen???
I look at my phone and apparently it is 90°F outside so I put on the dress my mom left on the hanger behind my door last night. The dress is a blue, almost royal blue colored summer dress, with light pink and white florals.
I grab a pair of white tennis socks and my basic white shoes before I run out of the house and grabbing my backpack on the way.
Running down the street, probably looking like a fucking idiot, and trying to get to school before it is way too late.
About five minutes later I'm in the school parking lot, "STRANGER!!! YOU. ARE. LATE" I hear someone yelling, so I turn around to see who it is. It's Coach Maggie.
"Fuck, it's fieldtrip day today" I mumble to myself while walking over to the bus, where the others are.
"Well, hey look who decided to show up. One more time Stranger and I will have to" Coach says before cutting her off.
"Yeah, I know. Can I sit down now?" I ask. She nods, and I make my way down to the back of the bus. I get to the very back of the bus and see a boy who I can't recognize but I feel like I've met him before.
"Hey, can I sit here?" I ask him because it is the only seat left on the bus. He looks up at me and nods softly without saying anything, he proceeds to moves his bag from the seat next to him and put it between his legs so I can sit on the seat.
As I put my bag on the floor before I sit down, the bus starts moving and I fall into him. "Oh, I- I- I'm so, so sorry"
"It's fine" he says quietly.
"So, he speaks?" I say jokingly, but without getting an answer or even a small laughter.
"Okay guys, I shouldn't have to say this since you are in high school, but this is a two-and-a-half-hour bus ride and you guys are high schoolers so I'm just going to say it. You must sit in your seat the whole ride, and if it is something just say my name and I will come to you. There is not going to be any kissing or making out, no throwing things around the bus, no hitting, no hitting on others and catcalling, you know what I mean by that, no yelling, and no biting. If anyone does not follow these simple rules you will be stuck next to me the whole ride. You will all get one warning, and if that warning isn't enough, you will get detention.
You can one of the boys in the front whistle.
"Okay, Tony. This is your first and only warning so get to the front because that is where you will sit for the next two hours with me." Coach Maggie says loudly so everyone in the bus can hear. It's a school bus so it's not that big but still it was loud enough to hear clearly even in the back.
"Ooo, Lucky meee" I can hear Tony say.
"Mr. James, that was your final warning detention tomorrow!" Coach says,
"Uhhgg, come on coach it was just a joke"
"That is another detention Mr. James, do you want to try for the whole week?" She says, again loudly enough for everyone to hear
"No" Tony says in an almost whispering volume.
"That what I thought, now shut up and sit! Please, the bus is moving" she said the first half angry before letting her tone soften for the rest of the sentence.
Tony sits down and the rest of the bus goes quiet, almost so quiet that you can hear the heart beat of everyone in the bus.
