Running through the door of our house, i saw mum pacing by the stairs "There you are, come on Alice we have to go!" She said as she grabbed the car keys and headed out of the door. "What?! Why?! Where?!" I called confused.
"Just come!" She yelled back, shutting the car door, i ran to the other side and hopped in. She was taking deep breaths to calm herself down but all it was doing was worrying me. "Emily's in hospital." She breathed out.
"WHAT?!" I screamed, the car swerved and she glared angrily at me. My hands shook and my legs melted to jelly. "oh my god oh my god oh my god.." I repeated scared. I knew something was up! Why hadn't i called her again to see if she was still ok.. What has she done?! When we parked outside the hospital, i undid the seat-belt with a shaking hand and swung open the car door. I ran straight to the Reception desk and demanded to know where Emily was. They gave me a room number and again i ran to find it. Just as i was about to push through the door, a doctor came out, "Woah there, careful, you can't go in there at the moment" His hands where on my shoulders stopping me from going in, "At least tell me what happened, please" I begged, the tears rising in my eyes, he let go of my shoulders, "She was hit by a car.." He said quietly. No No No, this can't be happening, she was so careful around roads!
"W-What? Is she going to be alright?" I croaked, it seemed my entire throat and mouth had gone dry. He nodded and walked away, there was obviously more than he was telling me. What if he just said she waas going to be alright to make me feel better?! What if she isn't going to be alright and i can't go in there to speak to her! I started biting my nails nervously waiting for Mum to show up, it was a bad habit of mine. She finally came around the corner looking quite mad at me, her arms where folded across her chest, "Alice, you can't just run through a hospital like that! You need to stay here for a moment- go sit on that chair until i come back?" She said sternly. I plodded over and sunk into the chair, i brought my legs up and rested my head on my knees, i rocked back and forth just thinking about whether Emily was going to be O.k. Mum opened the door leading to Emily and she just walked in. What? Why is she allowed in but I'm not? I thought angrily. I peaked through a gap into her room and saw Mum sat with Emily's Mum, just rubbing her back and saying things to her. I opened the door and slowly sneaked in, "Alice! I told you to stay out there!" Mum whisper-shouted.
"A-Alice?" Emily's small voice whispered. For the first time i looked over to her and saw her laying in the hospital bed, there were dark circles under her eyes, she had greasy hair, she had a gaping wound on her forehead and her foot was in plaster, "You came" She whispered again. Sounding slightly relieved
"Of course i did- but she didn't want me too.." I said quietly pointing my thumb back at my Mum. She smiled weakly at me, she looked so weak it made the tears come back again- but of course i didn't let them fall, they just blurred my vision. "You stink Em" I laughed, trying to lighten the mood, she chuckled quietly, "Thanks, so kind of you to pick on a cripple.." She said looking into my eyes, her eyes where different to anything i'd seen before, some days they were a light blue, others they were a gray-green colour, and some days they were a mixture of them all. I looked back to Emily's mum and gave her a small smile, i leaned down and hugged her, i didn't like to see her cry; she was like a second Mum. "So, hit by a car. Fun." I joked again looking back at Em.
"Oh yeah best day of my life, lets do it again," She said sarcasticly, we both laughed, i looked down at the bed and sat myself down where there was a gap, "So what exactly happened? One minute you where at home with food poisoning, now your at hospital after being hit by a car"
"Well, i was on my way to the shop to buy more milk because we were all out and Mum was busy, and you know there's the main road you have to walk along because theres no path, yeah well i tried walking on the grass but it was so wet and boggy that walked along the side of the road, next thing i know when i look up is a car speeding around the corner and it hit me, i can't remember exactly what happened next but i do remember saying repeatedly to the crowd around me that i was freezing cold." she said that like she was reliving it, her eyes where no longer looking at me but dazed out, I nodded and rested my hand on hers, we sat talking about nothing for a while until my Mum said she was taking me home now. That night as i laid in bed, scenarios kept rushing through my head- scenarios where Emily didn't survive, where the injuries got so bad that they couldn't save her, where they just completely forgot about her, i couldn't stop thinking about it, i dont think i could survive if she wasn't around.. After a short while i tried to close my eyes and sleep, it took some time but when i finally drifted to sleep i dreamed about memories Emily and I had made.
