Chapter 2

Unusual Events

We came up to the turn, and it was like everything went into slow-motion. The world around me turned from colorful, to different shades of grey. But wait, it gets weirder. I was still running with all my might, but, I couldn’t feel myself running. I felt as calm as if I was lying on the couch with popcorn and a movie. I noticed I was slowly making my way towards the turn, like walking through pudding. I started to see numbers, degrees, and calculations appearing around the corner I was about to turn. Almost like blueprint designs.

I hadn’t the slightest clue what all those numbers meant, but apparently my brain did. I started changing my movements, in slow-motion. I was twisting my body 90 degrees to the left, my right leg was straightened and my right foot was drifting across the the floor. My left leg was bent upward, as I was slowly traveling through a sprinting motion. Basically, imagine what a runner in The Olympics looks like, combined with a car drifting around a corner, with Drake, drifting behind me, right at my heels.

The world still grey, and in slow-motion, I continue the running motion. By this time my left leg and my right leg have switched rolls. I used just the right amount of push in my left leg to launch myself forward.

I felt like a million bucks. Too bad that feeling was short-lived. As soon as I launched forward with my left leg, as randomly as it appeared, the slow-motion stopped, the grey color warped out of everything around me, all in nothing but a tenth of a second.

Before I know it, I am catapulted around the corner and towards the lunchroom at speeds I didn’t even know I could reach! But just as I was about to pass through the lunchroom doorway, with Drake right at my heels! WHHAAAM!!!

I smack face first, at full speed, into my 2 best friends, Andy and Kat. I did a fall that looked like a guy over exaggerating his slip on a banana peel. I went from leaning forward, running, to airborne, legs and arms flailing wildly as I flipped upside down from the head collision.

Anyways, to make a long story short I land on my head, hard. And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. Both of my best friends, Andy and Kat, land ontop of me.

Andy, was the one that did the most damage. Kat landed, falling backwards, putting her hands down trying to catch herself. Sadly, all her hand caught was my face, smashing my head to the ground. Then her other arm landed, elbow first, on my stomach, causing me to lean upward in pain.

Worst. Mistake. Ever.

Andy’s feet were somehow swept out from underneath him and he was about to land face first on the floor. But sadly, he didn’t. Instead one of his hands caught my left shoulder and forced it down. While Andy’s left knee slammed into a spot, that no knee should ever be slammed into.

I cursed at Andy as we all got up and got ourselves back in order.

“Sorry, man. But lets be honest here, you ran into us.” Andy pointed out as he brushed off his shirt. Andy was an average height, with short, rough, black hair and blue eyes. Wearing a T-Shirt and camouflage cargo shorts, just like any other day. Andy was my best friend and all, but he can really be annoying sometimes.

“Yeah.” Kat said as she fixed her hair. Kat had long, straight, golden brown hair, dark blue eyes, and she was wearing a T-Shirt and skinny jeans. She shot me a glare. “Why were you running so fast anyways?”

I turned back to see a very unpleased, Drake Burns. Who had slid into a garbage can. The thought of his defeat made me grin. It also reminded me of that weird, grey, slow-motion thing that happened as I turned the corner. I pushed the thought aside for another time. Until, finally I responded Kat.

“Oh, you know,” I said taking one last look back at Drake. “Personal issues.”

“Okay, then?” She said.

“What about you guys. Where on earth have you guys been?”

They both tensed and looked at each other. Then they both looked back at me, completely normal again. What was the deal with that?

“We were just talking.” Said Kat. To be honest, as suspicious as I should have been. The way Kat said it, for some reason I felt the need to believe her.

“Oh, Okay.” I said in a dazed response, “Hey, when I was coming around the corner of the door, did you guys notice something... weird?”

“Like, what?” They both said at the same time.

“Like, everything going grey, things moving really slowly, and possibly some random equations coming from the ground.” I said, trying my best not to sound like a maniac. Andy and Kat shared a worried look. Like they knew something I didn't. I was about to ask what was wrong. But the bell rang for class to start.

Other than that weird start of the day, everything else was perfectly normal. Besides at lunch, while I was eating with Andy and Kat, Drake threw a grape at me from behind. I stood up, turned, swatted the grape out of the air with a backhand slap, and then it hit Drake right in the eyeball. It was hysterical. We all had a good laugh while Drake worked on getting the grape juice out from his eyeball.

The next day, I got all my stuff from my locker without getting bothered by Drake. Andy and Kat weren't at school that day so I was just kind of a lone wolf. Actually, now that I think about it, nobody bothered me at all, it was as if I didn't exist or something. I thought that it could’ve been some prank The Populars were pulling. So I decided it was nothing and continued on with my day.

But the next day, once again, nobody bothered me or even noticed me and there was still no sign of Andy or Kat. I decided to do an experiment So, I went up to my math teacher, and asked her, “Excuse me, Mrs. Brow? Can you help me with this math homework?”

No response. So I decided to push the limits.

“Mrs. Brow, you are one of the fattest human beings I know.”

Nothing. Null. Nada.

I didn't understand what the deal was with people. So, I decided to head to the bathroom to wash my face. I thought maybe it would help ease my senses. Halfway through the lobby, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed something in the wall of the lobby that I never noticed before.

It was an iron door. I walked over to it and felt the metal. Ice cold. I looked behind me, and nobody else seemed to notice me or the door. So, I pushed open the heavy, metal door and found a long, dark stairwell. I couldn't even see the bottom. But, why would the school have stairs leading down to the basement, in the middle of the lobby. Feeling adventurous, I took a few steps into the  dark stairwell. Just then I heard Kat’s voice yelp from behind me, “Kyle!”

I turned rapidly and I didn't see anyone. I wonder if I really am going insane? Good question brain. “Kat?” I called out as I reached forward with my hand, but Kat didn't seem to be anywhere near here. I shrugged and began to turn back when I heard a, CLAANG!!

I froze. It was pitch black. I couldn't see it, but I knew that the iron doors, and my only light source in the stairway, were now both closed off.

“H-hello?” I stuttered frozen still.

Nobody responded but I felt someone else's presence in there with me, in the dark. “Kyle!” Yelped Kat’s voice again. Kat’s voice, it sounded like it came from where there used to be an open door. Upon hearing the voice, I spun around and lunged forward planning to attack whoever was doing this. I felt something grasp my forehead, stopping me. Then I felt hard, firm, painful kick to the guts, knocking my glasses clean off my face and sending me flying backwards, down at least 10 stairs. I tried to sit up, in a daze. I leaned sideways on the steps. Then, something tiny and bright caught my eye, I saw a red dot.

Just a random... floating... beautiful... red dot. I wanted to be with it, I wanted to grab it, and claim it as my pet. I started to raise my hand to hold it, when-FLASH!!

An enormous burst of white, blinding me, was the last thing I remember seeing.
