Nicki
I smack my gum a little louder.
I follow my mama into her office through the main office. I carry the donut boxes while my mama carries the coffee and hot chocolates. We had to drop my little sister off at her first day of seventh grade.
Mama got a little emotional so we're a bit behind schedule.
It's my first year of junior year however and I'm most excited to reunite with classmates after summer break. Mama, my little sister and I went to Trinidad to visit family. It was fun, don't get me wrong, but I don't have anyone but family there. And those family members I haven't really built a true bond with so it was awkward having to tag a long with cousins.
I take in the coffee and caramel smell and leave the donut box in the teachers lounge. As I go reach in to grab a donut, my mother swats my hand away.
"Nika, go to class!"
I scoff.
Amira got emotional tears while I get shooed away.
My mama goes to the length of pushing me out of the teachers lounge, and past the front desk. She pauses to greet Mrs. Barnaby.
I can't help but notice the 10 kids (at least) sitting and standing at the chairs lookin' real embarrassed and pissed. I arch my brow. Did they not get schedules or something? I know there are quite a bit of mix ups on the first day of school.
"Mama, who are all of these kids? They new?"
My mama puts a hand on my shoulder and whispers in my ear, "Nika baby, some kids are just... how do I explain it? Well, you can lead a horse to water but cant expect it to drink. They already cutting up and doing the most."
I see the school resource officer along with some actual officers grab two or three from the bunch and cuff them.
They mumble a couple of drugs and substances and I cringe.
I notice one girl in particular. She must be new or in a different grade than me. She looks pretty tall, even sitting down with some stallion-like touches to her figure. Her figure sits so well and her style isn't so bad.
I smile at her but she doesn't really do any expression back. Just looks blankly at me.
"Nicki!" My best friend Aubrey appears and drags me away.
"Great, you can take her to class with you!"
I scoff at my mother's words.
Aubrey and I take almost all AP courses, the ones that aren't AP are honors, so we immediately begin to talk about our summer assignments.
However I can't get that girl outta my head. I never got her name, guess I'll just call her Stallion.
We walk down the halls and I greet people I don't hate but also don't consider close-close friends.
I can't tell if I'm excited or not for the new school year.
