My mother knew about the wizarding World even before I was born.
I'm the sixth child out of seven children and I always knew I was a mistake, my mother never wanted me to be born. She tried shipping me of to England where her ex boyfriend had just moved to 'I don't want the wretched child I have enough already' I could hear her scream down the telephone from the bedroom I had to share with all my siblings.
Being the youngest and the smallest my siblings cared for me themselves. For the first few months of my birth my mother had completely neglected me, she refused to bathe me, carry me or even feed me. To her I was nonexistent, I was simply an addition to the many errors she had made.
My eldest sister Wei become my maternal figure in the absence of my mother.
She cared for me, carried me everywhere on her waist, taught me to speak my first words watched me take my first steps.
Life was perfect with Wei I couldn't have wished for anything more. That was until her new boyfriend all the way from England came along and disrupted everything.
Wei was very pretty. She had a golden flecks in her dark eyes that silently laughed whenever she looked at you, her hair was like a waterfall silky and soft .
I used to love slowly combing it out, brushing it through with my fingers. She was warm, her laugh was like chocolate her skin Snow White and delicate you could hardly look away from her.She could have any boy in China anyone she wants but instead she picked Goyle. He was English, I could see how this appealed to Wei who loved trying out new things but the charm ended their. His hair was too blonde and he seemed to comb it all wrong so that the hair fell to one side instead of evenly parted. His had the fake sort of smile, his skin was red and peeling from sun burn and he had a bulbous belly.
The worst part was that he was twenty seven whilst Wei was still only nineteen.
Even when I was seven at the time I could see the way he leered at Wei his intentions couldn't be made any clearer.I wasn't allowed to be rude in our household. In China that is, girls were supposed to keep their heads down, find a husband quickly so they could work quietly for them in the kitchen like any other desired Chinese wife.
Iv always wished I was born a boy, how easy it would be. I could go to university! It was a dream unreachable, something my mother would scoff at, when she was not ignoring me she was busy telling me how dumb I was.
That didn't mean I wasn't clever. Being 'smart' here meant being competent enough at housework. Iv always worked diligently for her, and tried not to speak much but it was never enough.
Nothing satisfied my mother. We were not rich, nor completely poor.
My mother lived of all her ex husbands and boyfriends.
She was beautiful as well, almost more than Wei, but she had cold black eyes that judged you eternally. We had no known relatives and I didn't even know who my dad was. A lot my siblings were mixed, half Asian, my mother, and some English white father.
But I was fully Asian. I never even knew my dad but he had once sent me a postcard of an England castle and a locket necklace for my sixth birthday. That was the only time he had gotten in touch with me but I held the gifts close to heart.I wished so hard I lived in England with him I imagine walking down with him in an English dress I saw pale pink cheeked characters wore in my books.
It was only until Wei announced, two weeks before my eighth birthday that she was going to get married to horrible Goyle. And she was moving to England. Thousands of miles and miles from China.
I wanted to cry and spit and shout and kick like any other normal kid throwing a tantrum. My only maternal figure moving so far away without even consulting me!
I knew I would get into trouble if I cried of course so I simply stood there staring and staring at Wei's pretty face was that the last I would see of it? Her kind eyes? She caught my eye and looked so sad and apologetic. I broke eye contact ducking my head.
I glanced at Goyle his arm tightly around her waist his pearly white teeth flashing 'look at me I won a pretty Asian girl and I can show her off to all my friends' I glared at his feet instead wishing I had powers like in that book Matilda to blow up his feet. The best thing about my siblings is that their white dads would send them English books about the most amazing children that could use mind control and ice powers and shoot lightning from their fingers.
I could only speak Chinese so the words didn't make sense at first I'd just gaze at their animated drawings.
But slowly with Weis help I soon learnt more and more English until I was almost fluent.
Wei knew how of course, she was the most clever person I knew, ironic since girls weren't supposed to be smart at all.I couldn't believe she was leaving. I was staring deeply at Goyles feet my eye twitching with anger. Thinking about all these magical English children. When his shoes caught fire at first I thought it was sheer luck, the glass hitting the sun just right but soon I realised I controlled it. I moved it slowly up his trousers. Everyone was singing happily Goyle didn't notice at first when Wei screamed. The fire caught on her dress.
Goyle realised started screaming himself but he didn't have to worry the fire at diminished but Wei didn't extinguish. I stopped controlling. Realisation hit me.
I ran up to my room. Out of the screaming crowd.
I cried hard enough to distract myself from the blaring of the ambulance. The exit of the guests. The whining of children.I would never forgive myself ever. I would never sleep or eat again. I didn't know how I did it. I just knew I had done something. Mother told the children the next morning that Wei had some second degree burns all up her leg.
Apparently Goyle, as much as I wished I had scurried of back to England Adidnt seem to care that his fiancées leg was almost burnt of, it didn't effect her looks much anyways.
They had delayed the wedding but it wasn't going to be in China but in England. Wei was gone in a week. She hadnt even come to say goodbye.Mother was stranger than usual. She kept giving me looks, not of the usual amount of disgust but these ones were now of pure loathing. I was so scared she could see right through me knew I did it to Wei. I would wake up every now and then with pangs of guilt so vicious it was like a bullet constantly hitting me in the heart.
One day mother looked at me then sighed. It was extremely odd behaviour. She glared at me with severity than said. 'You will soon lead your own path Minh Chan. Choose your actions wisely, don't stumble of course.' She dissapeared around the corner saying saying nothing more leaving me in even more utter confusion and grief. It sounded more like a threat.
But one morning every child sleeping peacefully in bed there was a postcard on my little desk. It was of an England castle. My hands shook. I recognised the hand writing almost immediately. I couldn't see the words clearly but I'm sure it said from father, magic and England. My eyes blurred with tears. I read it properly.
Dear Minh Chang
Your mother has recently made me aware of a certain circumstance of your older sister being unidentifiably given second degree burns. You are not in trouble don't worry. In fact you will be coming to stay with me in a years time. You shouldn't be scared, your powers are extraordinary and you will soon be learning to harness them in a school with a bunch of other students your age! Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry is one of the best magic schools and I only want the best for my daughter! If youre confused about these arrangements ask your mother, I am sure she will answer all your questions!
Sincerely, your father
Dean Chang
Was this a joke Minh thought. But it seemed so real. Minh could hardly wait a year!
