From the moment our eyes met - more accurately my eyes landed on her bangs – I knew she was like us. Daniel, Sally, and I were orphans. Daniel's were murdered, Sally's abandoned her, and I had no idea who mine were.
The new girl was the epitome of radiating a dark aura with her long black hair that was cut to have bangs that covered her face. Her skirt was longer than it should have been implying that she was hiding something. Actually, everything about her screamed "I'm hiding something!" maybe that was the only thing she couldn't hide. She slept through the whole lesson, not even bothering to stay awake during the attendance. Normally that would earn her a smack from the teacher, but Mr. Becker just sighed and moved on to the next name. That either meant she donated a lot of money to the school or she was trouble, which I hoped would be the latter.
Her name was Vanessa, the name of the ancient Greek goddess of the night, how fitting.
I kept fidgeting in my seat until the end of the lesson. When it was finally over, I dragged Sally and Daniel to the side. I was pretty interested in the girl, still, I couldn't just act without asking them first. We stuck together, and even if it were a trivial matter, we would make sure everyone is on board. Especially Daniel. He was so much more to me than a friend, someone I would want to spend my life with. I really hoped one day he'd return my feelings, or else I don't know how I could live.
"Is this about the new girl?" Once again, nothing could escape from Sally's attention. It was as if she could read my mind at times, which isn't always comfortable.
I simply nodded at her question. After getting a shrug in response we turned to Daniel.
"I don't know. She seems kind of ominous, no? I mean, we aren't the type to go around and give people the 'death stare'.
"I think she is eccentric enough. Whatever, we could just shoo her if she's mean."
"Sally that's rude!" I couldn't admit it to her of course, but she had a point. What was it that was stopping us from ghosting her after a few times? Seeing that Daniel was wavering as well, I made the first move.
"Come on!" It wasn't much of a journey to her desk, but it felt like one. She woke up almost as soon as we stopped. Neither of us knew what to say as the few seconds of silence dragged on for what felt like hours.
Deciding that I couldn't take the tension build-up, I instinctively introduced myself without thinking.
"Nice to meet you, Vanessa! Name's Bon-Bon. These two idiots are Daniel and Sally. We're ditching school, wanna come?"
I must admit that sounded way off from what I had planned. It was for a fact that I presented myself as a bubbly and an outgoing person until I properly got to know someone, but telling a stranger that we planned on ditching school was an awful idea. From the look of utter shock on her face, I imagined she was either surprised that someone talked to her, or she couldn't believe the audacity to do so.
I worked hard to keep the smile on my face as I considered withdrawing my hand just as she shook it.
"My name is Vam-Vanessa. Considering that my only purpose in coming to this 'school' was to make friends, I see no problem in joining you."
She had a weird way of speaking. Not very much in a foreign accent way but more in a way that made you feel ... distant to her. She was right before me, and yet she felt so far away, cold like an iceberg, high as a mountain, and as troubled as a raging storm on an ocean. The weirder thing was that even those features about her felt bottled up. I couldn't see her eyes, but under those bangs, I imagined them to be glossy like a glass surface.
