I slammed the wooden door of the hut closed, its hinges squealing. "I'm home!" I declared.
A mute little old man looked up from his meditation, his Hawaiian T-shirt crinkling slightly.
Acknowledging my presence with a nod, reached for a shiny grew kettle settled on a wooden table with a cloth spread over. Pouring me a cup, he patted the place next to him on the mat he was sitting on.
I accepted the cup, steam wafting from it. "Thanks." I sat down.
He looked at me imploringly, wrinkles on his face crisscrossing.
I knew what he wanted, but I didn't want to talk about it. "I missed a deer," I mumbled, sipping from the cup to hide my shameful face.
He nodded understandingly.
This man, this little old man, was the only real father figure I'd ever had. He'd found me lying on the shore of this mysterious island, which, to this day, I didn't know what it was called, and took me in. He cared for me, nurtured me, protected me, taught me, and dealt with me. And now it was my turn to care for him, now that he was aging.
So every animal I captured wasn't just an extra Win point. It meant food for him. He was too old to go hunting anymore.
I'll try again later," I promised.
He shook his head, his graying hair swishing.
"What - we sill have something left over?" I asked, raising an eyebrow, tilting my head, and scrunching up my nose.
Nodding he returned to his meditation, two arthritic hands placed on his criss-crossed knees, and relief coursed through me.
I took that as an end to the conversation.
Taking one last sip of the tea, I got up before placing the cup in the hand-made wooden bucket filled with water.
I felt my body sag with exhaustion. I headed to the back of the wooden hut, where two hay beds rested on the dirt floor, stopping to pet my cat gently as she purred. I lied down on my hay bed and pulled the sheep-wool blanket up to cover me.
Closing my eyes, I fell asleep.
Hunting was something off my list for today.
