The sun was setting, sinking into the horizon to never be seen again till the next day. It was going to sleep and Kenma should do the same, he'd been watching the sky ever since he returned from practice. A break for the mind, a break for the eyes. The shadows and the dim moonlight settled onto his skin through his window. There wasn't anything to see anymore - unless you count a darkening sky with stars so small that squinting won't help you see them. Time to sleep, it was.In barely a second Kenma was sitting on a bench in his team's uniform. Has time passed that quickly? Had he been in his mind so much he couldn't even remember what happened last night? His eyes slowly roam around the place, suddenly spotting another boy that looked around his age and just as confused as he was. Before he could approach him - or mutter a 'hello, do you know what's happening?' - the other teenager made the first move.
"Hey!" He waves and as he jogs towards Kenma, the boy suddenly finds himself straightening his posture. Up close the boy literally resembled the sun in both looks and obviously actions, not wasting a second to start conversation. "It's pretty quiet here. Do you know where we are?"
Kenma shakes his head, the same questions circling in his mind. At his response, the boy holds his chin with his hand, clearly in thought. Unable to come up with a solution, he takes a seat next to Kenma and rests. The blonde is unsure if he should scoot over to give him more space.
"Okay...we'll probably be here for a while so what's your name? I'm Hinata Shoyo." He offers his hand to shake and Kenma accepts. For such a warm boy his hands are cold. Kenma takes in his appearance a little more and realizes that he's also in a sports uniform; those shorts won't do anything to raise the already cool temperature of the late afternoon.
"I'm Kenma Kozume." Hinata is still holding his hand. Should he tell him to let go?
"Your hands are warm. It's nice." Hinata brings Kenma's hands closer to his chest as if he were his own personal, portable heater. What a strange dude... Strange, but with a presence that was oddly comforting. A sense of familiarity spread through both of their bodies. Their faces might be new to each other but their vibe wasn't.
"Thanks.."
"Oh, my bad!" Hinata lets go and Kenma's hand returns to his side. He found himself longing for his touch again. Hinata points to his shirt,"you play too?"
"Yeah, volleyball. You?"
"Shit, really?! Me too!" He replies excitedly, glad to find someone who was also passionate about the same thing. "I actually have a match tomorrow, against Nekoma. Do you know them?
Kenma's eyes widened a little,"Yeah, that's my school."
Hinata is also dumbfounded. "..Do you have a match tomorrow?"
"The answer is pretty obvious.." he shrugs.
"You're right.." The orangette drifts away in thought. "Well, what a coincidence we met before our game, right?" He starts to go on a tangent and instead of stopping him, Kenma listens. His voice makes this whole thing feel...not so bad. "You know, I remember reading this article of how all these people claimed they met their soulmates in a dream before their actual meeting. Not sure why I'm remembering that now," he chuckles awkwardly,"but it was actually interesting- oh my god!"
"What happened now?" Kenma calmly asks but he was caught off guard from Hinata's epiphany.
"What if that's happening right now?! What if we're-"
Kenma wakes up. In his own bed and not on some random bench in the middle of nowhere. He checked his phone and saw that today is still the match he was talking about with that boy. Will he see him today? If he was real, Kenma needed to face the fact that some truth was held in Hinata's cutoff realization. He sighs and prepares himself. For some reason he wanted to get there fast and not take his sweet time walking to practice. His curiosity was taking over; which was as odd as his yearning.
When the Kurosawa team came in, Kenma felt like a stalker watching him talk to his teammates and play during the game, causing his own moves to be a little rusty but he didn't mind. He was sure Hinata noticed his presence as well. None of them did anything to act on it. Soulmates are a complicated concept, especially when you meet yours in a dream after never seeing each other. They were strangers until last night, so why should they believe in a superstition?
Kuroo had even noticed how much more focused Kenma had gotten during the game. His feline-like eyes weren't exactly fixated on the ball, but their opponent's middle blocker himself. There was something going on.
"Hey, what was with you before? You're acting differently." Kuroo brings said boy closer with his arm.
"Nothing." Kenma muttered, trying to distract himself with his switch. God, did this feel weird. He was too obvious with his staring and had been caught.
"Something about the middle blocker?" Kuroo turns around and finds the orangette staring at the two, only turning away when he's been noticed. His cheeks are a bit flushed, making an cute combo with his slightly pouting face. Now, Kuroo understood. He takes back his arm and crosses them over his chest with a teasing smile. "Lover's quarrel? I didn't know you were dating him."
"I'm not." Kenma quickly denied the accusation.
"Really? Because it looks like he wants to talk to you really, really badly."
"Shut up." His response earned a nudge from Kuroo, forcing him to look up from his game. Hinata had been standing there for a while... even his teammates had left already.
"You can thank me later. See you." he pats Kenma on the back and leaves, bag slung over his broad shoulders.
Now they were alone; just the two of them with the sun setting in the background. "This feels exactly like the dream, huh?" Hinata chuckles and rubs the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Some sort of crazy deja vu." Kenma subtly smiles.
"I...I researched the whole soulmate thing in the morning and I want to... give this," he points at the two of them,"a try. Do you?"
Kenma hesitates for a moment - being in a relationship was a big commitment,...but if it was him - he could manage. "I want to get to know you better." He finally says.
Hinata grins and takes his hand in his, "Me too, your hands are still warm. Do you want to go somewhere?"
"Anywhere is fine. I'll go wherever you go."
"Okay then." He squeezes Kenma's hand and they both begin to walk away from the site of their match. "So what game were you playing?"
