Chapter 41: Home

Lotte hugged Diana who cried into her shoulder. Not knowing what to say, she patted her back.

"Can you turn it back on?" asked Amanda. Constanze shook her head and pointed at Diana. Amanda walked over. "Diana, if we open the gate again, we can search for Akko."

Lotte squeezed Diana's hand. "Let's try, Diana."

Diana wiped her eyes with a handkerchief and followed Amanda to the control block. Constanze operated several levers and nodded as the block illuminated with magic.

A dwarven Hexenritter spoke in accented English, "Even if you open gate, dimension gone."

Diana put her hand on the Cavendish seal and spoke the spell. The arches flared with green light but the area between the arches remained black. Diana repeated the spell several times then broke down in tears.

"She needs to calm down. I'll take her to the manor," said Prof. Chariot.

Lotte moved away from Diana and let Prof. Chariot guide her away. Her vision blurred with tears.

Amanda put her arm around her. "I'll ask my clan. We'll find Akko. Don't worry."

She hugged Amanda tightly and shuddered at the thought of Amanda being trapped in the gate. Amanda's hand stroked her hair and she felt her nuzzle the top of her head.

A loud roar made her cling to Amanda even more. The injured dragon was resisting magic bonds on its arms and legs.

Amanda's eyes flashed briefly. "My clan is calling."

Lotte reluctantly let go. "I understand." She kissed her lightly on the lips. "Come back to me."

Amanda winked. "Of course, I'll be back... for more kisses!"

Lotte blushed. "I... I'll be waiting! G-good luck!" She watched till Amanda flew out of her sight then walked to the first aid tents and noticed that Diana and Prof. Chariot were at the dock of the manor. She blinked and stared. There seemed to be a purple glow around Diana's left wrist. As she wondered what it was, faint green lines formed around them. Her eyes grew wide when the lines formed a pattern that she had seen before. "Diana! Prof. Chariot! Portal!"

Prof. Chariot grabbed Diana and leapt away from the dock just as the magic circle solidified and glowed brightly. The circle began to expand in size then a large portal opened above it.

A torrent of water gushed from the portal and dock crumbled as if something very heavy landed on it. There was a blur of white within the torrent.

Diana rose unsteadily and activated her wand. She ran towards the portal and leapt above the white blur. Moments later, she tumbled out of the torrent and into the lake.

"Diana!" Lotte summoned her broom and flew quickly to where Diana landed. Prof. Chariot was already there and held onto Diana who was holding an unconscious but familiar creature. "A-Akko?!" Somehow, Akko was in her merman form. Water stopped gushing from the portal and revealed Fafnir on top of a large black dragon. Both dragons were unconscious.

"Can you float them to the first aid tents?" asked Prof. Chariot.

"Yes." With quick spells, Lotte carefully guided Diana and Akko to the closest tent. Nearby Morgian medics, Maeva and Dasti cast drying spells and moved them to cots. After a few spells from Maeva, Diana coughed water and gasped for breath. Meanwhile, Lotte cancelled Akko's merman form.

Dasti checked her vitals. "She's breathing. There appears to be swelling near her temple." She cast another spell. "Not good... a fracture... possibly a moderate concussion."
