It started as a myth. A legend passed from parent to child. Some even referred to it as a prophecy. Word of it spread like a dying ember setting a forest alight. It was a beacon of hope, a tale of a bright future, the thing that would end the years of hardship that'd fallen upon the village.
It told of a monster: a creature born of hatred who revelled in despair and calamity. Chaos was the creature's best friend, and fear his most dangerous ally. For the creature didn't go about creating fear through empty threats and intimidation. No, no, that was far too easy. Far too predictable. He'd get into your head. Weasel his way into your darkest dreams. Derive your life of any shred of joy. He'd feed on your negativity like a parasite. A parasite that, once attached, you were never rid of until he thought to rid himself of you.
The tale also told of a human. A mere, mortal, human. One with no given name or face; a blank canvas of infinite potential. They'd have a mind strong enough to withstand the creature's tricks and deceptions. An individual that would bring the monster to his knees. A person that would rid the townsfolk of his tyrannical rule, and in turn his demented games. Someone that would shatter his frozen heart like a wine glass, crushing the shards under their feet as they walked.
The creature had tormented the village for decades, and people were becoming desperate. They clung to the legend as though it were a raft in an open ocean. To fulfil the prophecy the townsfolk founded a new tradition: every five years a person was selected to journey into the forest, discover the castle in which he lived, and slay the creature. If they returned without proof of the monster's death, they were shunned and exiled from the community. But, if they were killed by the creature they were honoured as a hero. How would the townsfolk know they had died? Well, the creature was always one for gloating...
The final event of the selection was a tune sung by the village. It was a morbid warning to the creature. A song foretelling his demise, and the chosen human's victory:
"Creature born of fear and sorrow,
Your reign won't live to see tomorrow.
A mind that you can't pick apart,
Will break your frozen heart.""Creature formed of melting bone,
Who sits so proudly on his throne.
A human that you can't outsmart,
Will break your frozen heart.""Creature lurking in the dark,
It is your fate that here we mark.
From home tonight they will depart,
To break your frozen heart.""And for the many you have slain,
Whose efforts ended all in vain.
So to the one who plays their part,
Beware the frozen heart."\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Authors Note:
Yes, this fic was inspired by a Disney song, and a song from Frozen no less... Whatever it's catchy!
Also I wrote most of this prologue at five in the morning so if any of it sound nonsensical please let me know.
