Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonightAfter an hour of training and drills Yaz and the rest of her teammates were finally finished. "Great job girls see you tomorrow." Ash praises them, high fiving them or fist bumping them as they enter the locker room. She gave Yaz a warm smile as they both fist bumped. She put her shoes and water bottle into her bag before slipping on her boots and her coat.
Her mom texted her letting her know she was on her way like always. She sighed as she took a seat on the bleachers in the gym. "Aww why the long face yasmina?" Max asks with a devilish grin plastered across her face. Yaz scoffed as she rolled her eyes. "Go away." She groans out. "Oh I don't think that's how we want to treat people. No wonder you have no friends you are just so dislikable." Max teases with a smile. Yaz grimaced at her words.
The idea that she wasn't likable has crossed her mind before, so having it reinforced by max was hurting her. She couldn't help but think that maybe Kenji felt that way also. No wonder he wanted to give her the space she needed so bad. Instead of allowing her self esteem to be rocked by the comment, she got angry. She's always been sick of Max, she could never even understand why this started when they were such good friends before.
Yaz stands up frowning as she attempts to walk away, only to be pulled back by her bully. "Someone should teach you some manners." Max says annoyed. "I was clearly talking to you, you little brat." Yaz snatched her arm away from her ignoring her casual insults. "You think your everything because your at the top of the team." Max says. "I don't think I'm everything." Yaz interjects, causing max to scoff. She steps closer to her before speaking low enough for only them to hear
"You get everything handed to you Yasmina! Boys, leading spot on the track team, looks, grades! Well get this. Fuck you!" Max yells. Yaz pushed Max away, ignoring her comments yet again. Instead of bad mouthing her, she just clenched her fist.
Don't let her get a reaction out of you. Max grins in satisfaction at her reaction. "Hah, careful there Yaz. Or everyone will know you aren't as innocent as you seem." She threatens. "Are you crazy?! Like I'd ever be afraid of you." Yaz responds. Max laughs before turning away. Leaving a tense Yaz to her thoughts. As if she'd dare to tell such an unbelievable lie.
The next day, both teens sat awkwardly at their desk, flushing out the last few ideas for their project. They barely muttered a word to one another, the only time they spoke was to approve ideas with the other. Anytime Kenji started one of the short conversations yaz wanted to do more than just nod or shake her head. She wanted to say more than "mmhm" or "okay". She wanted to fix things, and vise Versa. Although his feelings were hurt, Kenji wanted nothing more than for them to be friends again. He wanted to talk to her again.
Despite it being only a short time, they'd grown to like one another. As they all exited the classroom due to the ringing bell, Yaz decided now could be an okay time to right her wrongs. This whole situation felt dragged on, it was about time they made up. She caught up to him, despite the constant bumping into people. The hallways were slowly emptying until it was only a few other people beside them. She tugged at the back of his sweatshirt.
She waits as he turns around, looking slightly annoyed? Or maybe unbothered. "Hmm?" he answers calmly. Averting her gaze she sucked in enough breath to begin speaking, "look, I'm really sorry for-". He stopped her mid sentence, "Save it. You asked for space, so I'm giving it to you." He responds. "Kenji it's been almost a week since that happened, will you just let it go?" She agitatedly asks.
