Of course, they would choose Haven.
They had a perfectly good child at home.
Their Golden child
Their child who didn't a have a single flaw in their eyes, unlike their 'wayward' child
Haven was always the scapegoat, the one who got blamed.
Honestly, she wasn't even that bad. She was average at worst.
She got decent grades, performed decently at sports, and they weren't a complete jerk like some of the other children who still get more praise in a day than Haven gets in an entire year.
But as soon as it was an option for Haven, well more like a threat waiting to be put into action- like a ticking time bomb. Haven stopped trying. Stopped try to be the golden child they all expected her to be, the perfect child, the new model citizen.
She stopped trying so hard to get the approval all children strive for, as it was always just out of reach. Stopped trying to avoid the inevitable. Just simply to get it over with.
I thought I was ready.
I thought it would be easier.
I thought they would change their minds.
I thought there would be another way.
I was wrong.
They chose me.
Out of context that sounds like it would be a good thing, but that is not how this world works. By choosing Haven they have chosen him, and that cannot be forgiven even if it was her who let it happen.
The human mind likes to play tricsk on itself- pushing the blame to someone other than themselves and changing the words in your head chanting "Its all your fault" into "its all their fault". it is always easier to blame all of the wrongs in your life on someone else than it does to let it come to rest on you.
But in some cases, like the one presented here, it truly was that the fault lies completely with them. Not just one of them, being Havens parents, but the countless of other parents having done the same thing. The countless of other thems who have allowed this to become what it has become.
The Choosing is not something to be taken lightly. When it was first proposed the law makers of the time laughed in its face, deeming it not even worthy to be read. But time does a lot to people. It changes them in a way that nothing else can.
Time caused the once strongest nation to crumble. For the darkness to take over everyone's hearts. For time can cause a once strong-minded man to unwind into a web for forgotten morals, of lost knowledge, of lost humanity. For that is the only way something like this would ever come to be.
While the world strives for the best, for the perfect, this goal- this reaching for the heavens. Much like in the biblical story of when mankind tried to build a way into the heavens only to be struck down and have to face the consequences of their own actions. They created The Choosing, their perfect building into the heavens, only to face the consequences, but if only it was not just the damned that received it- that truly saw it- for maybe the damned weren't really the damned.
Haven was never really the religious type, maybe because the ones that were, were the ones that chose her fate for her claiming that it was God's way or something else along those lines. If she were honest, she does not even believe in a God, for what kind of God allows their creations to become such things as the mankind she now lives.
The choosing was a way to make the perfect world, with only the best of the best, and apparently that did not include her. No one quite knows what happens to the chosen, or maybe it was just that they didn't tell her.
She can't bring her self to hate her parents for what they have done. Its not their fault she couldn't live up to their expectations. Its not their fault her brother was the better choice. It's not their fault this is what society has come to.
Haven doesn't know who's fault it truly is, but she intends to find out.
And she intends go show what the damned really can do.
