The wind seared across my tearstained cheeks, my hair billowing out behind me in light brown waves. I urged Cinnamon to run faster, pull me further away from the life I'd just escaped.
Mother's voice screamed my name but each call was fainter than the last until I could no longer hear anything but hooves hitting dirt. I willed my horse to slow, resting my face against the rough hair of his mane. My breath came out in ragged puffs and I ran my fingers through his fur in an effort to calm myself.
With effort, I hauled myself, along with my many skirts, off Cinnamon and dropped to the ground. Mud splashed the pale violet fabric and I cursed under my breath. Not that I cared much for the lace encrusted dress but I was sure to get a scolding for my carelessness. I wandered over to a nearby rock by a stream and stared into the glassy blue water.
Life wasn't easy at the castle. It had never had been all tiaras and ball gowns like every little girl likes to imagine. Well, it had, but I hated every second of it. The ivory walls and silk pillowcases suffocated me. Manners and etiquette had never been my strong suit. And now that I was 16, well, worst of all, the princes. Coming from far and wide to meet me, flirt with me, and otherwise attempt to seduce me. Like I was going to simply fall into their clutches so they could order me about. AS if I wanted to be known for my beauty and fertility while my husband ruled a kingdom. I didn't plan on sitting off to the side babysitting the children we'd created while he played with my body when he was getting to create rules and run my life.
Mother constantly expressed her disappointment in my "horrible disrespect for royal life" at every chance. It was growing exhausting. Today had been the last straw.
A new prince had come to visit. He was actually quite handsome, curly blonde locks that fell right to his tanned shoulders, aquamarine eyes, the works. He was kind, a real gentleman. Dinner had been delightful, Prince Andrew gushed about my beauty, how it was a gift to get to meet me, on and on and on. I smiled politely at every sweet word. After dinner came a lovely walk in the garden. The flowers were in bloom and the scent of cherry blossoms cast a pleasant perfume around us. Fireflies blinked in the glow of the setting sun.
The Prince slid his hand into mine as we walked. I told him about my family, our kingdom, anything I thought would please him, because, at the time, I really did want to please him. He smiled, making my heart flutter. I was getting my hopes up, royal life may not be so bad after all.
My own smile lit up my face as we walked back. I even walked with my head up and hips swaying, just as Mother had taught me. By the time we returned, Mother was laughing hysterically with Prince Andrew's mother but they both sat up straight when they saw us approaching.
"How was it sweetie?" My mother asked.
"It was nice." I replied.
"You've got a lovely daughter." Prince Adrew added charmingly.
"Oh thank you! Queen Lilian and I still have much to discuss but you can head up and show the Prince your room if you like, Iris"
"Of course, Mother. Right this way, your Majesty."
I led him up our hand-carved spiral staircase and along the plush carpeted hall to a door painted lavender. It creaked as it opened and I grimaced at the sound.
"Oh, the door says, 'Hello'". I mumbled stupidly, but the Prince actually laughed.
"You're pretty funny, Iris. I like it."
"Thank you."
We sat on the pristine white sofa by one of my many windows.
"So..." the Prince began to speak in a voice resembling a snake, "I so loved getting to know your personality out in the garden, I'd enjoy it if I could get to know the rest of you." He leaned closer.
"What do you mean?" I questioned.
"Under all that intricate clothing, what other beauties are you concealing?"
"I, uhm, I don't" A bead of sweat rolled down my face and I leaned away in alarm.
He slid closer, eliminating the gap between us. My heart hammered against my chest so hard I thought it might break free. His sugary breath swirled around me, smelling of pastries and sweet glaze. Just like the personality he put out. Until you got to meet him.
I couldn't move, my eyes widened, staring at him fearfully. I was paralyzed, my own breath came out in harsh puffs. He reached behind my dress and began to unbutton it, whispering things I couldn't quite make out. His fingernail caught my skin and a drop of blood ran down my back. He licked it away and kissed the scratch harshly, sucking out more blood. Was this dude a freaking vampire or what?
He moved his lips up slowly, kissing each inch of my skin till he reached my neck. I whimpered softly and began to cry, I couldn't get the strength to push him away. He pushed me onto the couch and fell on top of me, kissing and nibbling the spot on my neck. He sucked it and began to bite harder.
"Ow! Stop it, please! It hurts!" I cried out. He looked up and smiled wickedly, before dropping his head and continuing to suck the newly forming bruise. His hands moved to my shoulders and began working my dress off. It caught on my necklace, causing the rhythm of his kissing to break. His teeth penetrated my flesh and pain seared through my neck.
"STOP IT!" I screamed, twisting away and falling to the ground. I pulled my dress back over my shoulders and raced out of the room, leaving him shoved against the back of the couch in defeat.
I flew down the stairs, hoisting my dress up above my knees as I ran. I burst through the doorway with such force Mother gasped.
"What is it, Iris?" she asked.
"He tried to rape me!" I yelled.
Mother looked horrified, "Never use that word again, young lady! It could ruin a man's reputation." she scolded
"Well he could have ruined my life! Do you know what a pregnancy out of wedlock would do to me?!" I didn't wait for her answer, just ran to my horse and left.
