// people fall in love in mysterious ways //

I trace my finger along the circular cup stain, my skin grazing the rough wood.

Fingers snap loudly in front of my face and I jump in surprise. I look up and Ella is looking at me with a frustrated expression.

"Alex, the barista just called you." I look slightly dazedly at her and she points to the front of the cafe, where the barista is holding a plastic cup in his hand.

I shake my head to organise my thoughts and nod at her, getting up and heading to the front.

"That's me." I smile at the barista and reach out my hand.

// maybe just the touch of a hand //

In that split moment. I feel another hand come in contact with my own, fingers brushing against fingers and a warm buzz spreads its way through my hand across my whole body.

I pull away at once and look to my right, the boy is looking at me with a small smile. I'm momentarily breath taken at his beauty.

I don't think beautiful is usually applied to males, but this boy is beautiful with twinkling blue eyes and a dimpled smile.

"I uh - I'm Alex." I say, my words coming out a bit stuttered. I clear my throat and purse my lips.

"I'm Alex, too." He smiles, eyes gleaming. A surprised smile lifts my lips and I look at him with narrowed eyes.

"You're kidding!" I say. He shakes his head and chuckles.

"Nope, I'm ca - " He's cut off by someone clearing their throat loudly.

We both turn our heads to see the barista looking peevishly at us, "look, which one of you ordered a pumpkin latte?"

I raise my hand slightly in the air, "that's me." But so does Alex.

He licks his lower lip, "looks like we ordered the same thing... " He trails off.

"Look, one of you take it." The barista says a little rudely. I scowl at her and Alex pats my arm lightly.

"You can have it, I'll take the next one." I'm grateful but I can't accept straight away.

"No, no. You have it." I say in a polite tone so he can offer it again.

A grin brightens his face and he grabs the cup, "thanks!" He says. I look at him, feeling my jaw loosen a little and then narrow my eyes playfully.

"Cheeky." I remark, he winks and reaches into his pocket, sliding a slip of paper across to me.

With a goodbye, he walks out the door of the cafe and I look at the paper, numbers staring back at me.

// maybe it's all part of a plan //

"Come on, please." Alex says, a soft plea in his eyes. I cross my arms against my chest and narrow my eyes.

"No, I don't like surprises. Tell me where we're going." I say defiantly, he steps closer and I feel my heart stutter.

We've been friends for three months now but there's no doubt I want more, with Alex I will always want more.

He stuff his hands deep in his jean pockets and looks up at me, "please." He says quietly.

I can't take this; I'm standing on the third step of the stairs and he's underneath me looking up at me with the most innocent eyes I have ever seen.

Those eyes. God, those eyes are so blue, so honest.

I bite my lip, feeling my defiance slowly slip away, "okay. Fine, give me ten minutes to get ready though."
