What do I hear?

I adjusted the speed of my boat, slowing it and then stopping the engine so I could simply float. I was out in the Pacific Ocean. I desperately needed some time away from the fuss of my life, and this was the best way for me to do so. It was calm and quiet and peaceful. I grabbed a blanket and a bottle of wine from the kitchen and went to sit on the comfy leather seats. I poured a glass of the deep red liquid and leaned my head back, looking up at the glittering silver stars.

The sky was one of my favorite things about being out in the middle of the ocean. During the day, the sky was free of planes, paragliders and other distractions. During the nighttime, the stars were on full display, with the constellations brightly lined out, and shooting stars would flash across the sky that a city wouldn't see with all of its lights.

The ocean was my haven.

I sipped my wine, simply enjoying the lulling waves, which were rocking my boat slightly like a baby in a cradle. Then a different sound graced my ears. At first I thought it was simple my imagination, but the echoing notes like those of a soft lullaby were floating across the ocean. I felt thirsty, and the feeling only grew as the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard grew louder and closer. It was melodious and without words, and I knew without a doubt that this was no ordinary sea creature. I'd never heard a whale or dolphin make such a beautiful song.

I immediately stood, walking to the helm, slightly dazed by the song. I looked around, my eyes well adjusted to the dark, trying to spot the source of it. The ocean had turned as flat and undisturbed as glass, but I saw ripples originating from one point about a football fields length from my boat. The ripples seemed to be caused by nothing, but suddenly a pair of piercing, glowing silver eyes appeared, but what shocked me the most was that they appeared to be human eyes. The singing drowned out my fear that I knew I should be feeling, but my mind didn't seem to realize that I was indeed terrified, and the scene felt like something out of a horror film. The eyes moved slightly closer, the singing never ceasing, and the creature rose from the water, revealing a human-shaped body, until they were standing atop the deep blue ocean.

I couldn't see her well, but I felt deep down that she was more beautiful than I could imagine, and I knew the song was coming from her. She walked with slow, graceful, fluid steps, with a faint silver aura as if she were made of water and moonlight. As she got closer, an overwhelming feeling filled me, gently suggesting that I jump into the ocean and swim to her, and let the ocean fill my lungs, my veins, and cover my skin and flow through my hair until I became part of the ocean.

A small part of my mind knew this was crazy, that I couldn't do such things, but the rest of me was completely without reason and logic, under the spell of this creature.

A single word popped into my mind. Siren.

That's what she was. I had read all about mythology, and sirens were the most beautiful beings ever created, and would sing so sweetly that anyone who heard it would drown themselves. And as soon as I thought that, realizing what she was, the thought was gone and all that remained was the feeling that I had to be with her and become part of the ocean.

I walked to the railing, leaning over as she got ever closer, and soon her features were clear to me. Her dark brown hair glinted red and silver in the moonlight, and her eyes looked like silver coated crystals. My intuitions were right, she was the most beautiful creature I had ever laid eyes on. Her hips swayed as she came within a couple yards of my boat, her eyes watching me carefully as I eyed every detail of her.

She had on a gossamer dress, the palest blue I'd ever seen, with off the shoulder straps and a long skirt that brushed the ocean and floated around her as if she were underwater. She looked ethereal and angelic. The water rose beneath her feet, raising her to my level, and she now was close enough that I could touch her. I reached out, but she took a step back, just out of reach. I tried again, and the same thing happened. I had to get to her.

I lifted one leg out over the rail, and set it down on the raised ocean, and it held me just as well as any solid material could. I stepped over with the other foot, and I was now standing atop the ocean, just in front of the beautiful girl. I stepped forward, and each step I took forward, she took one backwards. This went on for a moment, and I looked back at my boat which was somehow almost a hundred hards away even though I was sure I only took a few steps. I didn't care though. All I needed was her.

The song continued to fill my ears, and I was drunk on it. I never wanted it to stop.

The next step I took, she didn't back away, I took another, very hesitant and praying to the ocean that she didn't move. She didn't. I reached up, touching her dark brown hair, which felt like the softest silk, and her skin like the petal of a rose. Her lips moved almost imperceptibly as she sang, the notes soft and smooth like vanilla cream. She reach up this time, her hand cupping my face gently. She leaned in, kissing me.

I melted into her touch, wrapping my arms around her waist, holding her tightly against me as I kissed her back. It felt like pure bliss was pouring into my body from every point where we touched, and I knew I was in heaven.

I was so lost in the feeling that I barely realized that the water was lowering, and I started to sink into the ocean, and I was glad that I was with her and the sea. It felt right. I had the faintest sense to take a breath, and I did, right before I was submerged, still holding tightly to her. The water felt pleasantly cool on my skin, and our kiss broke, and I gazed into her silver eyes as we sunk deeper, the salt water not having any effect on my eyes. I didn't care that my lungs were bursting without air, I barely felt it. She let go of me, and I was left floating without her touch, but she stayed right in front of me. My lungs couldn't bare the lack of air apparently, because I gasped and sucked in the ocean water. I felt relieved after I did so, like I had completed my journey into the ocean, feeling calm as the water filled me, and my body began convulsing, which somehow momentarily broke me from the spell and I screamed out a single sentence in my mind before my vision went black.

I'M NOT READY TO DIE!
