The river of which the citizens of Dayhold drank from, leads to a large lake in which merpeople live in! Their scales release a toxin that poisons the water, and makes you ill after drinking it, which makes you weaker over the days, until eventually you die. The people of Dayhold simply thought it was a disease spreading around and that it would pass in time.
