It was late in the morning when you awoke, which wasn't normally part of your routine. It was cold, and you noticed Bucky wasn't laying next to you. The sound of movement outside your door brought you out of bed to the door.
You could pick out soft murmuring and clattering sounds of equipment. Were they leaving for a mission? Your heart sank as you thought about Bucky's absence. They were letting him go and not you?
"Nat, let's go." Steve.
"It's not right and you know it, Steve." Natasha?
You pressed your hand to the door, willing yourself to stay quiet.
"It's for the best... To keep her safe." Bucky.
You felt the silence as their footsteps led down the stairs and away. Turning the doorknob as slowly as possible, you opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. The lights were off, but you could sense Wanda's magic in the common room, getting dimmer as they left. A mixture of anger and sadness filled your head, pouring out and dripping onto the floor. They thought you couldn't do it. Simmering in betrayal, you quietly padded down the steps to Tony's workshop. You knew exactly where he kept your suit from the last time you had done measurements. It was still in its pristine condition as you carried it carefully back to your room.
"Until it all blows over, right?" You stripped out of your clothes, pulling on a sports bra and bike shorts.
"Until everything calms down, right?" You slipped into the suit, zipping it up to your throat.
"Until I'm safe, right?" You laced up your boots and pushed in the earpieces.
It was quiet on the entire floor besides the air conditioner. You knew that it couldn't have been everyone on this mission... Right?
"Jarvis!"
"Yes, Ms. L/n?"
You sighed. "Tap me into Tony's comms."
"I cannot do that, Ms. L/n."
"Why not?!" Your voice rose to a near-shout. "I have to go out there!"
"Ms. L/n, I would advise against that. I was given specific orders for you to remain here until they return."
You stared at the ceiling, or wherever the hell Jarvis even was. Completely losing your patience, you let out a groan. "Tap me into Tony's comms signal, please."
There was a silence. Suddenly, you could hear voices through the earpiece.
"--keep the building -- we need -- the perimeter--"
You smiled, giving a nod to the ceiling and rushing out the door.
Somehow, you made it out of the building in record time, giving a wave to Pepper at the desk. She waved back, and you felt the wave of emotions hit you as the city surrounded you.
"--in sight -- location?"
You turned down the sensitivity on your earpiece as the world around your dulled to a low roar. So that's what he was working on.
A taxi came up, attracted by your hand stuck out into traffic. You leapt in as the driver gave you a strange look.
"Corner of 5th -- Tewks."
"Take me to the corner of 5th and Tewks, and fast." You said, holding the front headrest.
The driver sped off, weaving through traffic a little slower than you would've preferred, but riding with Natasha for so long had you accustomed to a certain level of danger on the roads. It was only a few minutes before you arrived... To the view of NYPD tape and a S.H.I.E.L.D. team.
