"Y/NNNNNN"
My older brother Mateo pounds on my door for the fifth time. "Get up! We have sancocho!"
I groan, lifting my head from my soft pillow. Wiping the sleep from my eyes I stand up, quickly brush my hair and make my way to the kitchen. My padre turns to me as I walk in. "Ah, buenos dias, cariño! I made breakfast." I smile and sit at the island. He'd probably burn the house down if it weren't for my sister, Alina. As if on cue, she rushes into the room, black hair clearly not brushed, to make sure papa didn't set anything on fire. Again. She sighs and walks out, rubbing her temples.
I eat the last of my food and kiss my dad on the cheek before standing to go back to my room. "Aww, no kiss for your sweet hermano?" Mateo looks at me smugly. "Not a chance, grease face," I flick his forehead. "Hey! Papi, do something," I can hear Mateo whining, but I'm already halfway up the stairs by now.
I entire my room and begin getting ready. As I'm looking for an outfit to wear something outside catches my eye. The Madrigals. Not again. The Madrigals are the pride and joy of our town. Each member has a special gift, except for my best friend Mirabel. Well, would be best friend if I hadn't been kicked out of her casa the night of her gift ceremony. Since that day, my family has never set foot into the Madrigal casita. I rest an arm on the open window sill and lift the other to prop my face up. I watch as perfect rainbow after perfect building is placed around town. Abruptly, I feel something sprout under my resting arm. I lift myself in surprise, being greeted by a yellow flower.
"Princesa Isabela," I think to myself as I look to find the most graceful of the family. Vines wrap delicately around my house until two dark eyes meet mine. "Y/n L/n!" Isabela exclaims, positioning herself on the outer window ledge. "It's been too long! My family has missed you so much!"
"Ah, senorita Isabela?" I try to return her smile, but my words come out as more of a question. The Madrigals seem to like my family well enough, but I still feel guilty for what I'd supposedly done.
She plucks something from the entangled garden she's just overtaken my house with. "Abuela would love for the L/n's to come visit for Antonio's ceremony! If you could, please ask your father to bring some supplies for the party. She's requested your family come earlier so we can have another pair of hands," She holds out what I now realize is an invitation.
"Oh! I'd love to be there. I'll ask him about it now," I try not to stutter as I take the card from her hands. As pretty as Isabela is, she is very intimidating. "Wonderful! I hope I'll see you there! We'd all be delighted," she hoists herself onto a stray vine and makes her way down the side of my house.
"Not everyone," I sigh and close my window. While most of the Madrigal family haven't seemed to hold a grudge against me, there's an obvious outlier. Camilo Madrigal. He's hated me ever since Mirabel's ceremony, and he's made sure I know it. The night of Mirabel's gift ceremony was a nightmare for me and he won't let me forget it. I don't even remember what happened before the ceremony began. I can only think of Mirabel's terrified expression as she anxiously grips my hand.
She'd asked me to walk to the door with her, and I was her best friend, I couldn't say no to her. We made our way up the stairs, and once we got their she had frozen in her place. I tried to step forward with her, but instead my foot caught the hem of my dress. I tripped, and my arms flew in front of me, searching for something to grasp. And they found something. Mirabel's door. The door lit up, and an older version of myself appeared engraved into the wood. I could tell people were yelling, but everything fell silent in my mind. I ran out crying, and I was only found hours later by my sister Alina. She told me it wasn't my fault, that I'd just tripped, but I could tell she was repulsed by me. I'd stolen something sacred, and I had no idea how to give it back.
