Judy had been fighting the battle away from her family by manning the medic tent. However, after a long night, the battle was finally over. Judy felt a sense of relief because no one in her family appeared in her tent. That meant they were okay. Right?
She made sure that her patients were stable then she left the tent. Judy ran around trying to find her family. In the distance, she saw Robot towering over the crowd. She ran towards Robot and when she reached him, she found Penny and Will.
"Penny! Will!" Judy yelled which made them turn around.
"Judy!" Penny yelled back as both Penny and Will ran to meet her. When they all reached each other, they gave each other big hugs.
"Are you guys okay?" Judy asked. "Where's mom and dad?"
"Yeah we're good," Will responded.
"And mom and dad are good too. They're over there helping," Penny said pointing off in the distance.
Judy then saw her mom and dad in the distance and she smiled. Her family was okay. They were safe. Yet...someone was still missing.
"Have you guys seen Don?" Judy asked.
"No I haven't," Penny exclaimed. "I'm sure he's fine though. He always is."
"I think him and some other mechanics went to the dam during the battle to fix some damage," Will said.
"Okay thanks," Judy said. "I'm gonna head up there to check on all of them and see if they need help. I'll be back."
With that, Judy jumped into her car and began driving towards the dam. She may not be the best mechanic but she wanted to be a hand to Don. She also just wanted to make sure he was okay.
The drive to the dam was an odd one. She'd pass destroyed lands and buildings but then all of a sudden it was beautiful trees and green grass. That made Judy feel better because it seemed like the battle didn't reach the dam.
However when she reached the dam, the door looked destroyed. The metal was bent and warped. She also noticed that the car the mechanics came in was still there.
Judy rushed out of the car and into the dam. It was like a horror movie. The lights were flickering, the walls were broken, and there was blood all over the walls. Judy looked down and dead bodies laid on the floor. She walked to the first body and it was a woman. After a quick check, Judy knew she was dead.
Holding her breath she turned over the next body. It was a man who was also gone. Tears began to fill Judy's eyes as she lost hope. All these people died in a horrible way. Was Don gone too?
"Hello?" A raspy voice yelled. "Is someone there?"
The voice sounded so full of pain but Judy would know that voice anywhere. She ran to the end of the hall and turned right towards the sound. There she found Don sitting against the wall holding his stomach.
"Hey Robinson," he whispered pulling out a grin. "Could use a little help here."
Judy rushed over to him and looked at his wound. It was deep, bloody, and looked absolutely terrible. She looked up at his face and it was white as snow. Judy felt a wave of fear and sadness wash over her and she looked away.
"I'm dying right?"
That surprised Judy and she looked back to him. His eyes were tearful but he also looked content. She didn't know what to say.
"Just say it Judy. Don't act soft for me."
"Yes Don," Judy answered starting to tear up herself. "You're going to die. I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Don whispered. "You didn't kill me."
"What happened?"
"One of the aliens got in," he explained low on breath. "It attacked all of us and then it heard one of its friends cries and left. We were caught by surprise."
"It's okay Don," Judy said. "You don't need to speak."
"Nah I gotta say some thimgs..."
"No Don..."
"Judy please," he said grabbing Judy's hand. "Please let me."
Judy didn't respond and let Don say what he needed to say.
"Judy, thank you for giving me a family. I never had one before and your family, they took me in and loved me. Tell them thank you for me and tell them I love them. John inspires me and made me feel welcome, Maureen was so kind and cared about me, Penny is my family and my friend and she saved my life as much as I saved hers, and Will is like a little brother to me. I even love that Robot," Don exclaimed beginning to cry.
"But you," he said squeezing Judy's hand tighter. "Judy you are the one I love the most. You're the one I don't want to leave. At first you were so sassy but I also noticed how strong and brave you were. I love how smart and kind you are too. You act so tough but I know how big your capacity for love is. You became my best friend, my family, and the woman I love. I want those to be my dying words to you. I love you Judy."
Judy was confused but she was crying just as much as Don was. She was losing him. She didn't want to lose him.
"Don," Judy placed her hand on his face and spoke in between cries. "I love you too. You bought light into my life when I needed it. You're funny, kind, and just as smart as me. Probably even smarter. You sacrificed yourself over and over again for me and my family and I am so grateful. I cannot imagine life without you and I am so angry I'll have to live that life. I love you so much Don."
They were both crying but Judy still leaned in. She pressed her lips against Don's. His lips were cold but they still tasted like Don West. After a few moments, they pulled apart from one another.
Judy sat down beside him, took his hand in hers, and leaned against his head. They didn't say anything else to one another but just sat there with each other. Judy holding Don up.
Don didn't last much longer. About fifteen minutes later, Judy no longer heard his ragged breaths. When she looked over, she knew he was gone. Judy started crying harder and just laid her head on his shoulder. Never releasing his hand.
She loved that man more than she let herself realize but now that he's gone; she feels it. He was family, her best friend, and so much more more. Judy would never forget Don West. And she'd never stop loving him.
