Super sad and angsty.

Sirius and Remus always try to make it point to say 'I love you' to one another even if they've been fighting. They want to let each other know that even if they are angry about something, they still love each other and will work it out.

When Remus leaves for his last mission with the werewolves in October 1981 he and Sirius had been fighting over order missions and general stress of the war (and of course the werewolf drama and Sirius secretly suspecting Remus of being the traitor).

Remus put his keys and wallet in his pocket and turned at the door before leaving their flat. "Sirius?"

"Hmm?" He didn't even look up from his breakfast.

"I - I love you."

"Yeah, I'll see you when you get back from your mission. Okay?"

"Oh, okay."

A few weeks later Sirius is sitting in his cell at Azkaban and all he can think is "I didn't say it back, why didn't I say it back?"
