The Present:

Kawaki swung his sword but Boruto deflected it.

"I didn't think you'd go this far Kawaki." Boruto admitted.

Kawaki ignored him.
"I'll send you where I sent the seventh Hokage, Boruto. Home."

"Guess this was the only possible outcome?" Boruto responded.

"Yes, that's right, the age of Shinobi is over." Kawaki stated.

Boruto pulled out his old ninja head band tying it across his forehead.

"I'm still a shinobi." He said before lunging at Kawaki.

Why did things turn out like this?

Two Years Ago, Kawaki's memory:

"C'mon Himawari, let's get dinner."

The small girl nodded, looking back behind her up the staircase. Kawaki held her hand and led her out the door, yet she turned around one last time to peek over the staircase. She looked up the stairs everyday, but nothing ever changed. Kawaki knew that Himawari still had hope, hope that Hinata would come out of her room, but that was never going to happen. Hinata didn't cook dinner anymore, she didn't smile anymore, she never left her room. The woman was consumed with dispair, and had been ever since Boruto and the others deserted the village.

The seventh Hokage was more than ever consumed in his work, which Kawaki thought was his way of coping, distracting himself in his job. Although Kawaki supposed Naruto had to be doing damage control and pleading with leaders and other Kages to please spare the life of his son. Not that Boruto needed it, in Kawaki's opinion. Kawaki knew all to well that Boruto would do fine on his own. So would the rest of his little group.

It was a quiet walk to the Hyuga compound, where the two found themselves dining  most of time, and training.

Kawaki found himself speaking to Boruto, even if only in his head.
"Boruto, you smug little jerk, I'm not a good older brother, so why did you leave me with this? I can't cheer Himawari up, but then again, you're the reason her life is so fucked up now. Man if I ever see you again, I'll beat your ass. Then I'm taking you home. Where you belong."

Why did things turn out like this?

Sarada's memory, two years ago.

Another successful mission from team 7; Sarada, Kawaki, and Konahamaru. Kawaki was a quick learner and passed his chunin exam a couple months after Boruto and Mitsuki left. Kawaki was able to pick up the slack, to fill the two empty slots left by her traitorous former teammates. Sarada was close to being a jonin, even closer than Shikadai.

That's because Sarada couldn't give up, not yet, not on Boruto and Mitsuki. They were out there somewhere, and she would bring them home. Sarada asked her mom

"What did you do with yourself when dad left the village?"

Her mom pulled her into a hug as tears pricked Sarada's eyes.

"I was with friends everyday. Or I was training, preparing myself mentally and physically for when I'd see him again. I thought about him every day." Her mom answered.

Sarada tentatively asked her dad, which was her first time confronting him about his desertion.

"Why did you do it?" She asked.

Sasuke looked at her with a saddened expression.
"I was looking for the answers in the wrong people, and things.  I wanted power so much that I lost sight."

Lastly Sarada asked one more person. She knew it might not even be a good idea, because if she was distraught about Boruto's desertion, she couldn't imagine how they felt. But she had to ask about how they felt when Sasuke left, it was the only thing that gave her clarity on how to feel about the loss of her teammates.

She felt everything. She felt angry, horribly angry at their stupidity for leaving, angry they could do this to the village, and to her. She felt lost, like she was missing something in her life. She felt sad, incredibly sad like all she wanted to do was see them again. She felt guilty like she made the wrong choice, when they had asked her to join them and she said no.

Knocking on the door of the Hokages office, she entered a messy room. The Hokage himself looked like he hadn't slept in a while, and looked sick.

"How did it feel when my dad left?" Was the last question she had to ask, and she had to ask the Hokage.

"Like I couldn't breathe. Like I had done something wrong, like I had lost a part of my family, like it was up to me to fix things, but I didn't think I could, and it scared me."

Sarada was amazed how the Hokage could put exactly how she was feeling into words.

The 7th Hokage paused.

"And it feels just like that right now." He said his breath starting to catch.

The Hokage suddenly looked very pale and ill, and Sarada felt selfish for asking, even though it who she was. She asked questions, and learned. And once she learned something she mastered it, and moved onto the next.

But she didn't think she would ever master this, regardless she would keep moving forward. Lord 7th was wrong, it wasn't all up to him, it was all up to her. That day, she had the choice to join them, but she didn't have the power to stop them, but that would change now.
