We leaned onto the mattress, my mother, sister and I. Mum had an excited look on her face, her hands cupped infront of her, resting on the silvery blankets we were all resting on.  We glanced at each other then back at the hands.

"Show us mummy! Show us!" Katie, my sister grew impacient, jiggling her legs, staring intently at the fingers hiding what we both wanted to see. "Okay,Okay!" She laughs and slowly separates her hands. Katie and I lean forwards in anticipation and after a few seconds I hear her sigh in awe. It was beautiful. Big though. Much bigger than a normal ring, it only just fit on mum's thumb, loose.

It was silver like, and absolutely covered in jems. The top was circular and there was a pattern of green and red stone with diamonds mixed in. In the center, and the star of it all, a ruby, a big fat ruby, circular and fitted into the middle.

"Wow......" Katie whispers, just as I say "Holy crap." My mother gives me a look, putting the ring down. "My friend gave it to me when I was in Cairo. I blink at my mother, and Katie, having recently studied Egypt in school, asks, "It doesnt look like it's from Egipt.. Eee-gy-pt. Where is it from?" At this mum smiles. "It's Turkish, from the ottoman empire. This ring is around 400 years old!"

That makes our eyes go wide, and makes me almost afraid to touch it. I had figured it was old, it's design had been too delicate, too perfect, too unique to be something made recently. What happened to it before it got here? Who owned it? What series of events got it where it is? It was mystifying.

The ring was anonymous, a mystery, and something to worry about at a later date. My mum picked it up again, wrapped it up in a hankercheif, and put it back into the cardboard box she brought it in. She then turns to her book shelf, turns away from us, and puts it on the second-to-top shelf.

And that was that. We were sent off to bed, and her lights went off. That was the end of it, or so we thought...
