Donghyun was always quiet. According to his classmates, he was supposed to be in third grade but gapped a year and transferred to this school. Donghyun was the only one taking notes in class and disappeared every break. For the first few times, Woojin assumed it was because the teachers wanted to see him as he was a transfer student, but Donghyun disappeared every day and came back with bruise marks.

The class was already packed with rumours that he was being beaten up, and debates ran about whether he needed help. Woojin felt an odd desire to protect Donghyun. He ran down the stairway and looked through every corner of the school. They weren't close, but he shouted Donghyun's name anyways.

The response came from the back storage. To be precise, it was abusive language in fear of getting caught. When Woojin turned the creaky handle and opened the door, the first thing that came into his eyes weren't the two assailants, but Donghyun, taking the beatings in a rather calm manner. Blood was on his lips, and scratch marks on his neck had already started scabbing. Woojin took Donghyun's angular wrists by the hand, but he couldn't hold on tight enough under the fear that they may break. Donghyun broke free from his grip after a few steps. He pushed Woojin away with the last of his strengths left.

"The fuck do you think you're doing?" He stared down at Woojin's eyes with liveliness. A fragment of light shined on the silence.

"What were you doing, then? Why did you get beaten up?" Woojin felt himself being swallowed by Donghyun's stare.

"It's not your problem, why are you so invested in me?"

Woojin didn't have anything more to say. It came from his natural protective instincts. The age and gender were different but he knew too well that the desire to protect overwhelmed him, after losing his sister.

The bell rang. The two assailants were already gone. Woojin regretted not catching the two first, but he wasn't dumb enough to not read the room, especially with Donghyun still staring him down.

"Sorry. Get back to class first."

Donghyun quickly walked out of the room in big steps. Woojin wandered around the storage in frustration. Through the gap in the door, he could see four 10 cent coins, illuminated by droplets of blood. He wiped the blood off the coins, then shoved them in his pockets.

"Don't go around being beaten up."

Woojin threw the coins on Donghyun's desk. Donghyun looked up from his notes then said, "They're not mine. You can use it if you want."

Woojin thought Donghyun got ripped off. Isn't that normally what everyone would think. If it's not his, then is Donghyun not the victim? All kinds of thoughts rampaged around his head.

"95 cents for 9 hits."

Donghyun mumbled as he took out a few more coins from his pocket. "Only took 5 hits so I can't have the 40 cents."

Donghyun harmed himself by borrowing others fists. Pity built up in Woojin but he also realised that there's really nothing to wish for in this world, considering that Donghyun couldn't even make a dollar after taking 9 full blows. At least, to the soft-hearted maltese that then scraped some of the coins off his table, saying that he can't take them as he didn't take the 9 hits. Even after then, his wounds never healed. Every break, he left the classroom and came back bleeding. The only exception was on rainy days, as the janitor worked in the storage rooms to fix a few things. Woojin waited for rainy days. It was different from waiting for his death. The rain that killed Woojin stopped the bleeding on Donghyun's wounds.
