"Dammit, my hair is gonna get all wet". Seventeen year old Osamu Dazai walks outside into the rain and shuts the front door behind him. "Such a wonderful day already." He says, sarcastically. He pulls his school bag over his head to avoid getting rained on. If he had any other way to get to school, he would definitely not be walking. However, his mother goes to work early in the morning and he can't drive. Due to this, walking to school is pretty normal to him. That doesn't make it any more fun though.
The school looks as if it's taunting him in the distance. 'Almost there' he thinks to himself. Dazai runs inside of the school, he looks at his bag to see his notebooks and supplies soaked from the rain. "Just great," he groans. "Today is gonna be great". As he's putting his things in his locker, he notices something out of the corner of his eye. A short boy. He had long, ginger hair that was pulled back into a messy ponytail. With hair that color, how could you not notice him? That wasn't what caught Dazai's attention, though.
The boy looked just like an old friend. They had met in the third grade. One day, when they were thirteen, the boy disappeared without a trace. Dazai texted him constantly. However, he never got a single text back. Eventually, Dazai gave up on him. If his friend wanted to talk to him, he would. That didn't stop him from thinking about him though. In fact, he never forgot about him. For that reason, seeing the boy made Dazai freeze for a moment. 'What are the chances of it being him? Why would he suddenly come back after being gone for those four years?' he thought to himself. He decided to ignore the ginger.
After all, he could just be overthinking. Maybe it's a new student who just looks like his old friend.
This plan of ignoring him didn't work. Dazai went to class and tried to go on about his day. However, he couldn't stop thinking about the boy. What if it really was him? He decided that if he saw the boy again, he'd confront him. The bell rings. Dazai gets up out of his chair, rushing to his locker. He's ready for the day to be over. He sees the ginger again. "Chuuya-" as soon as he speaks the boy whips his head around. "What do you want?" he says, angrily. Once he recognizes the source of the voice, his expression changes. He still looks annoyed, just a little more shocked.
"Where have you been?" Dazai says. People in the hallway are starting to stare at the two. "That's none of your business. Why do you even care?" Chuuya says, sharply. Dazai frowns. "I just wanted to talk to-"
"I don't care. Just leave me alone already." The auburn boy turns around and walks away. Dazai watches, stunned. He didn't understand why Chuuya wouldn't speak to him. 'He's the one who ignored me for years, why would he be angry?'.
He walked home that day, still thinking about the interaction. It was still raining but that was the least of his worries. He walks in the front door, hanging his schoolbag up. "How was school, Dazai?" his mother asks. "Good." he replies, without saying another word. He goes to his room and slam the door shut. Most days, when he gets home he will talk to his mom for a bit before starting on any homework. She works early in the morning so she is always home when he gets home. Today, however, he didn't feel like talking about his day. He plopped onto his bed and stared at his phone. Dazai still couldn't understand what he had done wrong to Chuuya.
For the first time in years, he sent Chuuya a text.
