"Quiet, Gorsekit," Soarwing, a pure white she-cat, told her kit, bringing him closer to herself.
"Where do the kits come from?" Gorsekit asked his mother, his large green eyes fixed on Soarwing. Brightwater, a sand-colored she-cat, chuckled as best she could while kitting, amused with the lack of knowledge.
"You'll learn when you're older," Soarwing answered, "Go play with Ratpaw or Splashpaw."
"Where's Earthpelt gone in the name of StarClan?!" Brightwater whispered angrily. Her mate should have been here by now. He promised!
"Are you comfortable?" Reedwish asked her. Brightwater nodded. Reedwish had practically taken over his mentor's, Barkfur's, job of medicine cat.
Later, Brightwater lay in her nest with two kits nestled near her. She was disappointed, he didn't even come to support her. But she only felt pride as she gazed upon her kits, a tom and she-kit, both strong. The tom was a sandy yellow, with almost a mane. The she-kit was bright orange, had a white underbelly, and had darker orange stripes.
"I see you've had your kits," Earthpelt said, walking in.
"Without your support," Brightwater hissed at him, "You don't even acknowledge them as your kits!" Earthpelt narrowed his eyes, eyeing the kits near Brightwater like prey on the fresh-kill pile.
"Have you named them yet?" Earthpelt questioned, ignoring her spiteful remarks.
"No," Brightwater replied, "You better not think you have any right to name them."
"They're my kits!"
"Not anymore," Brightwater argued, "That was the last chance you got." Earthpelt left, growling with anger.
"I'll give you enough love for the both of us," Brightwater whispered to her kits, vowing silently. She ended the night by giving them their names. Lionkit for the young tom, and Finchkit for the she-kit.
