Ahhh...I'm so sleepy...
Staying up two nights in a row sure is tiring.
"Don't push yourself too hard. You'll collapse."
I turn around when I hear the voice behind me.
Standing behind me is my colleague and old friend, Kaito Fujisaki.
"Kaito..." I say, "What are you doing here? It's 2am."
"I'm here working late, too." Kaito says. "Did other people sucker you into doing their work for them again?"
"No, I was just going over the data for tomorrow's meeting."
"It's about that project, isn't it..." He says. "Almost done?"
"My presentation at tomorrow's meeting is important." I say. "So I need more time.."
I try to mask the anxiety in my voice, not wanting to worry him.
I look down, then feel a slight heaviness on my head.
His clumsy way of patting my head makes me smile.
"When times are tough, call on me for help." He says. "We go a long way back, remember?"
Kaito lifts his hand as if to caress my hair, then lowers it to my cheek.
I raise my face and meet his gaze.
His slightly stiff eyes gaze back.
"Would you count on me more if I were your boyfriend..?" He says.
"Kai.." I whisper.
Before I can speak, his phone vibrates loudly.
Kaito's hands leave me.
"A senior employee wants me.." He says as if nothing had happened.
"Kai...to...was that just..."
"Well, I have to go back to work. Good luck with your stuff." Kaito says, shoving something at me.Then he briskly walks away.
He'd handed me the canned coffee and energy drink I always drink.
He's trying to cheer me up.
"Thanks, Kaito."
I'm still a bit curious about what Kaito was about to say, but I turn my focus back to my computer.
