"Damn it, Phil!" Dan cursed, pacing his hospital room. "These contractions fucking hurt, I'm in so much pain I can't fucking sit still!"

Phil sighed, moving towards Dan to gently kiss him.
"I'm sorry, Bear.. I wish there was something I could do to help.." He whispered sympathetically, gently rubbing Dan's swollen stomach.

Dan flinched slightly at Phil's touch, but soon relaxed. "It's okay, I just wish the morphine would kick in.. The doctor said I'm going to be ready to push soon, and I heard that shit hurts." Dan mumbled, crawling back into the hospital bed, and clutching his stomach.

All of a sudden, he let out a blood-curdling scream, and he went limp.

Phil rushed over to him, shaking him gently.
He didn't wake up.
"DOCTOR!!" Phil shouted, running to the nurses desk outside of Dan's room.
"Please help!! MY HUSBAND JUST PASSED OUT!" He shouted.
The nurse gasped, running down the hall as Phil ran back in to be with Dan.
"It'll be okay, bear.." He choked out, holding onto Dan's hand.

The doctor ran into the room, examining Dan's stomach.
"Emergency C-Section!" He shouted, motioning for two nurses to come and wheel Dan's bed to the OR.

Phil ran beside the bed as the wheeled him out, now starting to cry.
"Will he be okay?!"
The doctor paused for just a moment, and patted him on the shoulder.
"We'll do everything we can to save your husband and the baby, just wait out here." He said, and with that, they disappeared into the operating room.
Phil sat down in a seat, and started crying.

Dan can't die.. He can't lose him.
His best friend, his lover, his world.
And their little unborn baby girl, the one they can't wait to welcome into this world together..

Phil must of cried himself to sleep, because next thing he knew, he was gently shaken, and he awoke to find a grim doctor standing in front of him.

He took a deep breath, preparing himself for the worst.
"Dan.. is he..?" He asked, voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor shook his head.
"Your husband is fine, he's sleeping." The doctor said, and Phil breathed a small sigh of relief.
But the doctor began to speak again, his voice laced with sadness.
"We couldn't save your baby, Mr. Lester.. The umbilical cord got wrapped around her neck, and it was too late." The doctor said sadly, putting his hand on Phil's shoulder.
"I'm so sorry for your loss. Your husband has been moved to the ICU, you can go see him."
Phil nodded, bursting out into tears, walking down the hall into the ICU.

He gasped, his heart aching at the sight of Dan. Peacefully sleeping, unaware of what had happened.

He pulled a chair over to his bed, sitting down. He took his hand in his, and began to talk to him.
"Hi, bear," He began, voice wavering as he spoke. "I hope you're feeling okay, you gave me quite a scare." He whispered, bringing Dan's hand up to his lips, kissing it softly.

Dan groaned, opening his eyes slowly. "Lion!" He whispered happily, smiling. "Where's our baby girl, what does she look like?" He asked, patting his empty stomach.

Phil's heart stopped, as he tried holding back the tears. "Dan.." He began quietly. "We.. We lost her, bear..We lost her.." He whispered, bursting out into tears again.

Dan immediately shook his head, tears forming at his eyes.
"No we didn't, please tell me you're joking Phil, please.." Dan whispered desperately, Clinging to Phil's hand.

Phil looked up at him, eyes red. He said nothing, but just cried harder.
Dan moved over, allowing Phil to climb into bed with him, as the two mourned the loss of their baby girl.

~THREE YEARS LATER~
"Happy first birthday, Lucy!" They both shouted, laughing at their baby girl.
She cooed, stuffing her cake all over her face.
Phil's mum laughed, picking her up out of her high chair. "I'm going to clean this one up. Be back in a second!" She said, disappearing into the bathroom.
Phil looked at Dan lovingly, and gently kissed him.
"I'm so happy it worked out for us this time, Dan.." He whispered, laying his head on Dan's shoulder.
"I am too, Phil.. This is our second chance.." Dan said, wrapping his arm around Phil's waist.

They both knew.
They knew that their little girl was up there, smiling down at them.
