Waverly was laying on her bed, staring at the stars affixed to her ceiling, their glow long gone. She wanted to go to Shorty's because that was her best chance to run into Nicole...who still hadn't responded to her voicemail. But she also didn't want to go because she might run into Nicole. God, that doesn't even make since, you idiot. You want to see her but you don't. You ignore her for years but then leave a message and say you miss her. The mixed messages aren't fair. "Get your shit together, Waverly, especially before you drag someone else into it," she scolded herself.
Waverly jumped as her door flew open with a bang and, before she could process what happened, Wynonna was on top of her smothering her with sisterly love.
"You asshole, why didn't you tell me you were coming home? And what shit could you possibly have to get together?" Wynonna asked between play slapping her sister.
"Oh that? That's nothing. Just practicing a line from a new movie. I'm trying to get the self-loathing mood just right."
"Yeah, sure. Well. sounded pretty sad-sack to me so I think you are done practicing. Now, we drink!" Wynonna grabbed Waverly's hands and started pulling her off the bed. "Up you go. Come on baby girl. You might be some hot shit actress to everyone else but to me you are still my annoying little sister. You have five minutes to get ready or else I'm kicking some ass. Let's go...whiskey awaits!"
Wynonna sauntered out of the room like the boss she is and Waverly couldn't help but laugh. Even if she wanted to let the fame get to her, Wynonna would never allow it. She would beat her down in a heartbeat while holding a drink in one hand...never spilling a drop.
"Hey diva, let's go!" Wynonna yelled up the stairs. "This train is pulling out of the station and you better be on it."
"I'm coming, geez. Give a girl a minute." Waverly shook her head as she joined Wynonna for what was sure to be a crazy night.
Shorty's was just how she remembered it when she worked there as a waitress. Back when she was just a small town girl trying to save some money for her inevitable escape from this place. Looking back now she never knew why she felt so determined to leave. The town was actually quite charming and the people...well, everyone except Bobo and his crew...were so warm and friendly. She knew the regulars in Shorty's wouldn't make a fuss over her because they knew her back when, but she couldn't help but to be nervous anyway. Fame is a funny thing like that. It makes you doubt who is real and who just wants to bask in your limelight. A hazard of her lifestyle...one that was part of the deal.Wynonna dragged Waverly in and immediately dumped her in their booth at the back of the bar. She wanted to catch up with her and this would give them the best chance to drink without too many interruptions. "Stay here while I get us some starter drinks," Wynonna cautioned. "I think I saw Perry up front and he has had a hard-on for you since grade school so keep your head down, avoid eye contact, and try to keep it incognito."
"Gross, Wynonna." Waverly exaggerated her features to express her disgust. "I'll be fine. I'm a big girl, remember?"
"Yeah, whatever. Just stay here. I'll let Gus and Curtis know you're back. I'm sure they'll want to say hi."
Waverly just smiled. Wynonna didn't know. How could she? Waverly never told anyone about Nicole. And what happened between them. But she knew Gus had to know. Because there was no doubt Gus had to clean up the mess she made of Nicole when she breezed out of town without ever looking back. She wasn't worried about seeing anyone in Shorty's...until now. Until Wynonna mentioned Gus. And suddenly, Waverly was terrified!
