After a few weeks of searching through the new york times i found an ad for a underground open audition. The ad said that a local band was looking for a lead singer and it said to meet somewhere uptown close by. I thought to myself 'Perfect! It's right up my alley'.
I told Clare where i was going and she seemed thrilled. I took the bus uptown and followed the GPS on my phone to the stage building where the audition was being held.
There were several cars parked at the curb and i assumed the place would be reeking with people. My chance of winning the position would be 1 to 100. I thought about turning back as i walked through the glass double doors and seeing the main desk area surrounded by several indie musicians like myself. But i decided to give it a try since i had come all the way out here.
"Um excuse me Mrs., is this the building where they are holding auditions for leadsinger?", i say walking up to the secretary desk and asking the lady there.
"You found the right place! Just fill out this form here and here, turn it back in and i'll give you a number.", She says giving me a clipboard with a registration paper on top.
I go to sit down and fill the paper out. When i finish, i turn it in a go back to my seat with a name tag stuck to the front of my sweater.
I glance around the room nervously and notice everyone else either jamming with their earphones in or sleeping waiting for their number to be called over the speaker.
In about two hours my name is called and i rush up out of my seat and into the audition room avoiding the stares of bored people.
The room consisted of a long table, several chairs occupied, four judges;two female, two male; and a slightly raised platform which was the stage.
I quietly walked onto the stage and faced the judges.
"Hello"
"Hi. And what is your name?", one male asks.
"Sara Knudsen"
"And what will you be singing for us today, Sara?"
"Um..'I Can't Decide' by the Scissor Sisters"
"Okay. Start whenever you like."
I clear my throat and begin.
"It's not easy having yourself a good time...."(*Play Music*)
~Time Skip~
I finished the song and looked up at the judges reactions.
They all wore shocked expressions and started clapping immediately after I had finished.
"I believe we have found our star",one of the female judges says happily and the four of them nod their heads in agreement.
"Wait a minute!", a masculine voice calls out from somewhere to my right in the audience. I find myself staring at a rich looking man in a pinstriped business suit who looked like he could be the CEO of a company. He gets up from his chair walks over to me and whispers in my ear,"Can i talk to you for a minute? I have a possible deal we could make. And i'm positive it will be of interest to you."
I nod my head yes and he leads me offstage to the side out of earshot of the judges suspiciously looking over at us.
"I'm the manager of the Burg Sanchez Record Company and i have my own band at home that would love you for a new addition to the crew. I would like to set an appointment with you and discuss this further in private sometime.", the man glances nervously behind us looking at the judges.
"Go on..."
"There are many people willing to buy you up for self profit. You've got the looks, the voice, the personality and that makes you gold. I'm giving you a chance to expand your horizon before you make a decision. I would love to hire you. What do you say? I'll give you double pay."
"..........I'll think about sir if that's alright?"
"Yeah, sure kid. Here's my card. Call anytime and make an appointment with my secretary. We're waiting for you kid. And i want to tell you that their band sounds terrible on audio. Their lead singer quit because they weren't making money quick enough. Cheap scumbags. See ya around kid.", he gives me a small eggshell white business card with black lettering on it, then shakes my hand in a firm grip.
"Yeah okay....um....thank you"
"See you in my office soon", he gives me a wink and a curt wave goodbye then disappears around the corner with the sound of a door clicking open then closed.
I walk back onstage and tell the judges that i need a day or two to weigh my options out. They give me a contact number and each judges congratulates me shaking my hand happily with a wide smile.
