I walked into the Angel Café, some friends tagging along behind me. We’d all just gotten to a booth to the left side of the restaurant when a shrill voice interrupted.
“Asch! So glad to see you again!” Evalin- dressed in her black and white maid-like outfit –called, waving her arm in the air before grabbing some menus. Vic looked over to me, raising his eyebrows.
“You know her?”
“Somewhat. In a way.” I pinched the bridge of my nose, taking my time to turn and face Evalin. Her face was flushed with excitement, her eyes sparkling a bright hazelnut.
“Asch, it’s so good to see you again!” Evalin wiggled about, a grin seeming permanent on her face. “How’d it go with your teacher last night? Old man gave me the creeps, ugh. But he did seem pretty worried-” before she could finish her sentence, I towed Evalin by her wrist into the Café’s restroom. She was embarrassed by this, probably getting the wrong idea.
“Asch, what are you-” Evalin gasped in awe, looking at the extravagant cube I’d brought out. “What is that? It’s so pretty! Not very colorful, but still alluring!”
“I found it last night. With Mr. Goodwin that is.” I explained my story in detail, telling Evalin from the moment I met up with Mr. Goodwin to when I called up the police. Her reactions and small comments showed she was listening closely, wanting me to go on.
“That’s really strange, but…what does it all mean?”
“Good question. I’m not so sure myself, but whatever all this is pointing to, it for sure has to have started with Mr. Goodwin and his wacko experiments.” Without saying another word, I got up, leaving Evalin standing alone in the bathroom with no doubts that she believed me. Vic and Rachelle didn’t seem too happy that I was leaving, but they allowed me to go without any smart remarks. They probably thought that I’d just set up a date with Evalin, something along those lines.
Later on that night, after calling Evalin to see if she had gotten off work or not, we headed into a smaller part of the city, a simple walk to clear our minds of everything. Although we knew better; we knew what we were both thinking of.
“…so those monsters? Mr. Goodwin? They’re somehow connected?”
“Yes, they are. Like I said earlier, I found some papers, reports that someone else that worked with Mr. Goodwin did. Whoever it was, they were talking about Mr. Goodwin using live experiments- people like us or anyone walking around –to make these Humonculous…‘things’.” The handful of words didn’t sound right together.
“Hu-mon-cu-lous…uhm…” Evalin tested the word on her lips, seeming uncomfortable with it. “So they’re called Humonculous?”
“Yeah, that’s what the report stated. Those Humonculous are, I mean were, human beings at one time, or he created the bodies and put human souls in them, I’m not sure, but then Mr. Goodwin did some weird things, which killed them, and then he used some type of chemical that he himself created and they became monsters unlike any other…” A heart-felt sigh reached my lips. I’d have to explain better to get the point across, otherwise it sounds like a made up fairy tale. “In other words, in a smarter sounding explanation, Mr. Goodwin made monsters, life everlasting, using this drug… Mr. Goodwin named it Mocaphim.” My fist clenched. This was getting really ugly, really fast. Evalin didn’t comment, so I added, “I need to do something about this-“
