I stared down at my reflection at the waters edge. I am the Alpha, the head of the pack, and I am yet to find my mate. Our wolf cannot control itself on its own, this is why we have been given mates. I angrily swing my hand at the water, distorting the image. A pack will never be successful with a insane Alpha, and an Alpha will never be sane without his Luna.
Alfa, it is time.

My beta, Luke, was contacting me through mind link.

I stood up and shook the water out of my hair, which had splashed up when I hit the water.

The queen was to be introduced to the kingdom, and as her officers, we had to keep the palace guarded for her protection. Personally, I've never met the queen, or even seen her. After her introduction to the kingdom, all her officers will report to her, and go through the ceremony.

The ceremony is when all officers take  the pledge of loyalty to Her Majesty. Then an ancient ritual takes place. Afterwards, we all have even more devotion to her than before the ceremony.

I shift, running in the direction of the palace. Dodging trees, jumping over small streams, this is how we are meant to live. All wolfs live in the forest, all have a purpose in the pack. Yet the stronger, higher rank males also have a purpose outside of the pack. We are officers of the royal court. It is our duty to protect the royalty and our pack.

There are roughly 26 packs in the kingdom, but most are small, only containing 30-40 members. There are four larger packs, containing around 100-130. My pack, however, is the largest, holding exactly 183 members. I am the Head Alpha, I rule over the other packs and my own.

The queen, I am told, is young and beautiful. It will also be my job to help her find her king. All werewolves are good judges of character, this is why we are protectors of the royal court, we can tell when one is lying or not.

Being Alpha, my senses are more acute than other wolfs. I have mind links with all my of pack, and the surrounding Alphas. When the ceremony is complete, we will have the same connection with the queen.

All of my officers are already at the palace, keeping commoners out of the palace. I break through the forest's edge, seeing the queen upon the balcony, her back facing me. The doors shut behind her as she walks through the threshway.

I smell the sweetest fragrance in the air, one I have never smelt before. The aroma is faint, but I could never miss it. It was just strong enough to detect the mixture of scents. Sweet cherry blossoms and vanilla, but with a hint of something else, something foreign to me. I stepped forward, nose up in the air, walking slowly in fear of loosing this intoxicating smell.
Alpha, we need you here, you must meet the queen, My beta informs me.
I will be right there, I reply, and take off.
