Maybe...

She laughed richly. He was amused at the fact that he amused her, especially since the woman sitting on his couch beside him was an impossible figure to please, or so he thought. At work, she was a cold woman, bent on perfection, meticulousness and maybe even, (dare he thought) world domination. But on that frosty night, with her car broken down, her wallet missing, and her cellphone low on battery, she was totally out of character when he found her in tears by the sidewalk. Misfortune apparently brings out her good side.
A smile slowly crept to his face while he continued to watch her clutch her stomach in boisterous laughter, "You know..." she chuckled when she finally halted for air, "I'm not gonna let you get away with this."
"Get away with what?" He smiled charmingly. She returned the smile then reached over the coffee table for the cup of hot cocoa he had served her earlier, "Being nice to me."
"Is it illegal?"
She snickered, "Well, it's not usual. And I'm not used to it. Plus, I have a 'Ruthless and Cold-hearted' reputation to uphold as you may have noticed." Her thumbs played with the warm cup on her hand as she spoke.
"Well, if you're not gonna let me get away with being nice to you, how exactly are you going to do that if you have a 'Ruthless and Cold-hearted' reputation to uphold? I mean, nice begets nice, right? And...you're not nice." He hesitated to mouth the last line.
Her chin wrinkled slightly as she pondered, "Maybe I should let you get away with this." she turned to him, gentle blue eyes stared at his soft gray ones.
He frowned, "Maybe I do want something in return."
"Maybe you're just saying that..." she smiled in joking suspicion.
He cocked his head to the side and crept closer to her face, "Maybe I am. Maybe I'm not."
"Maybe you should make up your mind..." she whispered, their faces no more than three inches apart.
"Maybe you should back away before I kiss you..."
She chuckled softly, "Maybe I don't want to..."
