Festus broke down a lot. Breaking down in the middle of the Pacific was not Leo’s idea. One moment, Calypso and Leo had been sharing a romantic evening together, and Leo was thinking, Oh, man. Oh, man. This is like, beyond awesomest. Then he was catapulting through the night, clutching Calypso, and Festus was breathing fire as they were hurtled toward the ocean. Leo yelled, “OH, MAN! THIS IS BEYOND AWESOME!” It was in fact, anything but awesome.

Leo landed on a horse. At first he thought Festus was swimming and he was on his back. Then he realized he was on the back of a sea horse. It was literally a sea horse.

“Hippocampi,” Calypso explained.

“Hey, hippo?” Leo said, “We need to get to Camp Half-Blood.”

The fish horse whinnied and started to swim.

“What about Festus?” Leo yelled at it.

The horse whinnied, like, I’m swimming through the Pacific at a hundred miles an hour at midnight and you’re worried about the dragon?

Just then, Leo remembered something. “Percy!” He gasped.

“Who?” Calypso whispered.

“Holy Hephaestus, Percy’s gonna kill me!” Leo’s heart filled with dread.

“What’s wrong?” Calypso asked him, putting a hand on his shoulder.

“I promised Percy that he would help me rescue you! He’s gonna kill me!”
“I’ll help fix that,” Calypso said. “Percy is my friend. He is my brave one.”

“Okay,” Leo said uncertainly.

Lights flickered up ahead.

“We couldn’t have possibly bordered the states and ended up by Long Island that fast,” Leo realized.

Calypso nodded. “I agree.”

The hippocampus stopped at the shore and dropped Leo and Calypso into the beach water. Leo hastily pulled her out. He trudged up the shore until they reached a bus station. From there, they drove to San Francisco. They were dropped off at a grassy hillside.

“I know this place,” Calypso said. “It is a safe haven for demigods.”

“No way,” Leo murmured. “Calypso, we can’t be here. This is a Roman camp. The Romans are trying to kill us! Last I heard, anyway…”

Suddenly someone came charging out of the hillside.

“MONSTER!” The figure yelled.

Leo lit his hand on fire and the kid backed away. “AGH!”

“Roman,” Leo said, “I’m a Greek. I come in peace. Please don’t try to kill me, or you’ll end up sizzling like a Leo Bomb exploded next to you.”

Calypso rolled her eyes. Leo grinned.

“Leo?” The voice said. It was deep and quiet, and kind of Asian.

“Frank?” Leo returned.

“Pluto’s pauldrons, is that you?”

“It’s me, dude!”

Frank came running out of the shadows. Leo shut off his hand as Frank crumpled him in a powerful bear hug.

“We all thought… I thought… We thought you were dead!” Frank put on a pouty face as he released him.

Leo gasped for air. “Dude… your hugs… psycho… elephant hug, dude!”

Frank grinned. “We need to send an Iris message to somebody! You’re alive! Oh, man! I gotta tell Piper! And Jason!” Frank bounced on his toes. Then he noticed Calypso.
