I sighed a little as I sat outside the experimental chambers, readjusting my coat. "Doctor Harrow." I heard a familiar voice behind me.
I looked back to see a man in the same uniform as me. White lab coat, gray tshirt, jeans, and sneakers. His face was identical to my own, though his green eyes held a more piercing gaze than my dull ones, and his black hair was longer and messier. "Nick. We're brothers. Just because I'm a higher rank doesn't mean you have to refer to me as Doctor Harrow. Call me by my first name, how many times do I have to tell you?" I asked, crossing my arms.
"Sorry, Pete." Nick laughed, rubbing the back of his head. "Anyway. What's up? You nervous about this?" He asked, going over to my side.
I paused for a moment before sighing. "I guess..." I admitted. "Its just...hard to believe ghosts are real. Let alone that the animatronics we found are actually haunted by them..."
"Wow, is the great and powerful Peter Harrow afraid of ghosts?" Nick asked teasingly, a sly smile on his face.
I couldn't help but snicker, nudging Nick away. "Shut up, you jerk!" I chuckled. Nick just laughed.
"Doctor Harrow and...Doctor Harrow." Said a small voice as the door to the observational room opened up. I looked over to see Lucille Frazier, my timid yet very intelligent assistant. "The, uh...animatronic is ready for questioning."
I nodded a bit. "And we're sure the strange energy we found doesn't hurt them?" I asked, sticking my hands in my labcoat pockets.
Lucille nodded. "Yes. The most it did was cause a little shock, but the animatronics are overall not affected negatively." She said, straightening up her posture. "In fact, the animatronic seems to have gotten more active. In fact, it's been singing since we administered the energy."
"And do you know what song it's singing?" I asked and looked over to Nick. He had already walked off, most likely having other duties to tend to.
Lucille thought for a moment, sort of humming a bit to herself, as if trying to remember the melody. Than she looked back up at me. "I believe it's a section from Toreador March, Doctor." She said quietly.
I nodded a little and went over to the door. Lucille stepped aside to let me in. As soon as I took a step into the observation room, I heard the song. I looked into the room the animatronic was in, separated by a one way mirror.
The animatronic was an old, battered brown bear who I think was called Freddy Fazbear. It was in a static position, one arm raised in a still wave and the other holding a fake plastic microphone up to its mouth, which was slightly opened. It didn't move, the eerie music coming from it sounding like a music box, mixed with the sound of a child's humming.
I went over to the desk and sat down. Lucille shut the door, going to stand a little ways behind me. I picked up a small stack of papers that was on the desk, it was full of questions. After analyzing them, I grabbed the microphone in front of me and pushed down on the button.
"Hello? Test test, one two, can you hear me?" I asked. I could hear my own voice through the intercom on the other side of the glass. The animatronic bear's song suddenly ceased, and I could see it's lifeless glass eyes glance up towards the intercom on the ceiling. "I'll take that as a yes..." I said, grabbing a pen from my coat pocket and writing down that the animatronic was responsive.
After a few moments, I spoke into the microphone. "Can you please tell me your name?"
"Why, I'm Freddy Fazbear, of course!" The animatronic announced in a deep, goofy voice. "Where are my friends? Where are we?"
"I'll be asking the questions here, sorry." I said sternly. "And you know what I mean. I want your name. Not the bear's."
Silence. Thirty seconds of no response. I sighed a bit. "Give me your name." I repeated.
Freddy sort of blinked a bit and tilted his head. His ears twitched a bit. "I...do not understand."
I sighed a bit and grabbed a small list of names, looking at it. Beside the names were pictures of children. "I'm going to read off a list of names in alphabetical order. If any of them sound familiar, tell me what they mean to you."
The bear nodded. So I cleared my throat and began to list them off. "Cassidy."
"Friend." The bear said.
"Charlie."
"Friend."
"Chris."
"Mean."
That perked up my interest. I wrote down a little note before continuing. "Elizabeth."
"Mean." The bear repeated.
I wrote down another note. "Fritz."
"Friend."
"Gabriel."
"Oh..." The bear paused, looking down.
"Is something wrong?" I asked, glancing up at the robot. When I received no answer, I spoke again. "Are you Gabriel?" I asked.
It thought for a moment and slowly nodded. "I...think..." The bear nodded.
I circled the name. "It says here that you're eleven. Is that true?" I asked.
Gabriel gave me no response and instead looked at me, staring through the one way mirror. I felt my blood run cold for a moment. "Who are you?"
I leaned away from the microphone and sighed a little in annoyance. Once I gathered myself, I turned back. "My name is Doctor Harrow. I am a friend, and I am trying to help you and your friends. But I can only do that if you cooperate and answer my questions. Do you understand?"
"I want to see my friends. I want to go home." Gabriel said, his gaze unmoving.
"And you will. But first you have to answer my questions." I reassured, tapping the pen against my desk. "Now, tell me. Are you eleven?" I asked.
There was a moment of silence before Gabriel seemed to relax, leaning back. "Yes. I am eleven." He answered. I let out a sigh of relief as I wrote that down.
"Alrighty..." I murmured and glanced at the next question. "We can get to that in a moment...Gabriel, what is your relationship with Elizabeth and Chris? You called them 'mean'...why is that?" I asked, looking back up at Gabriel.
Gabriel paused for a moment, as if processing the question. "...they're mean." He murmured.
"Yes, I understand that, but why?" I asked.
The animatronic's hand twitched a bit. "...mean..."
I felt my annoyance start to bubble up. "Alright, but I need to know, why is that?" I asked, my voice becoming someone crude.
There was a drawn out silence. Then, the animatronic dropped it's microphone, and it's hands flew to its head. "MEAN! MEAN MEAN MEAN!!! THEY'RE MEAN!!!" Gabriel shouted, the animatronic starting to pull its jaw apart.
I immediately stood up and turned to look at Lucille. "STOP IT!!!" I shouted. Lucille had frozen up and nodded, running over to a remote that was on a shelf. She had grabbed the remote and pushed a button on it. Robotic screams filled the air, and I looked back to see electricity coursing through the animatronic in the form of a shock. I sort of settled down, sitting back down as the shock ended. Thank god we had found those stored away in a back room.
The animatronic's arms fell limp to its side and its head hung down. I could hear soft crying coming from it. I leaned to the microphone. "Are you alright?" I asked.
"Why did you do that?" Gabriel sobbed. "That hurt...why?" The animatronic stayed unmoving.
"You were having an outburst and not cooperating." I informed as Lucille went back to where she was standing before. "We couldn't risk you damaging yourself. A controlled shock was the only way we could get you to stop without anybody getting hurt."
"But I got hurt!!!" Gabriel shouted, still in sobbing hysterics. "I'm a person, too! I got hurt!!!"
"I did not think a ghost could experience pain." I said. "My apologies. It won't happen again."
Gabriel didn't respond, still sobbing.
I paused for a moment before looking back at the paper. "I'll get back to the question about Elizabeth and Chris later." I sighed. "How did you die? Were you murdered?"
No answer.
I frowned a little. "Gabriel. Answer me. How did you die?"
"I won't tell you. You hurt me." Gabriel murmured.
I sighed and rubbed my temples. "Answer the question and I'll make sure you're not hurt again." I offered. When I received no response, I turned to Lucille. "Shock it again."
"Wh-" Lucille went wide eyed. "B-But you said-"
"Did I stutter?" I scoffed. "Shock. It. Again."
Lucille hesitated, but nodded and went back to the shelf. She picked up the remote and, with a deep breath, pressed the button. I looked away as another scream pierced the air, I was almost blinded by the flashes of the electricity. Eventually, the shock ended, and I sighed a little as Gabriel's sobs replaced the screams. I looked back at the animatronic, it was collapsed on the floor. "Gabriel?" I spoke into the microphone again.
I received no answer.
"Gabriel. Answer me." I stated. Still nothing. After a while, I sighed and pushed the microphone away. I pulled a paper closer to me and started to write down the conclusion.
"Subject went into hysterics after asked about Elizabeth and Chris. Freddy animatronic attempted to destroy jaw. Initiated a controlled shock. Afterwards, Subject refused to cooperate, even after another shock was admitted. End of experiment 1."
I stood up and picked up the paper, looking back to Lucille. "I'm going on my lunch break. Can you take these papers to my office for me?" I asked her.
Lucille nodded. "Of course, Doctor Harrow."
I sort of half smiled at Lucille and took a deep breath, going to walk out of the room. I reached my hand out to the doorknob, and paused as I heard Gabriel speak. "You...you're not a friend." He murmured. I waited for a few seconds before opening the door and leaving, and my thoughts wandered to the other animatronics we had found.
