I sighed deeply and sunk into my black leather desk chair. My hands sluggishly reached over to the edge of my desk, picking up a stack of reports and letters from other packs. I ran my eyes over the first document.
"Treaty Request -" I sighed and fed it to the document shredder on the floor to my right.
"I offer my sincere condolences for your loss -" I ran that one through the shredder without reading any further. The next one was the front page cut-out of a newspaper.
"Beta of Blood Bone Pack is Dead!" Under the heading was a description of how he died, a silver knife doused in wolfsbane to the eye and out through the skull, and how utterly devastated his mate was, it went on for paragraphs. I pushed the shredder aside and leaned back in my chair with the paper in my hands.
What really intrigued me was the part where the suspect of this act was discussed, towards the end of the page.
"The murderer is still unknown-" What? "-When the scene was investigated, the murderer left no trace, scent, or footprint behind except for the initials 'L.W.' written in the Beta's own blood on his cold forehead. More info on this case when the crime scene investigators..." It trailed off into meaningless ramble from there. Who could have done such a thing and gotten away with it without leaving a trace?
"Thoma- uh.. Alpha, we just lost contact with two of our merchants near the eastern borders, we think they might be dead. One of their mate's is crying hysterically in the main room." My dad's beta- my Beta now, informed from the seat opposite me, across my desk. I huffed and massaged my temple with the tips of my fingers.
I took my glasses off and folded them in my hands, sending a glare in his direction.
"Go send a rescue team to bring the corpses and have them prepared for their family." I hastily undid my tie as it was suffocating me to death.
John looked at me with pity and stood, shoving his phone into his pocket.
'Are you okay?' He asked through mind link.
'Something like that.' I answered dully.
He stepped closer and clapped his hand on my back affectionately before exiting the room quietly.
I needed to go for a run.
'I'm going for a quick run.' I directly sent to John.
'Not alone you're not!' He replied as I felt him walk further.
'And why the fuck not?!' Lately my emotions were all over the place, and I got angry over anything.
'There's a killer out and about- the same one who casually killed your parents, and you want to go for a quick run, look at the trees, get killed, feel the wind running through your hair. Nothing could possibly go wrong.' John was an older guy but he was very sarcastic.
'How do you know?!' My hands were balled into fists and I was shaking in anger.
'There are few secrets in this world, boy. I know you are strong enough to keep the pack safe and powerful like your father has done for so many years. Though you are missing one vital piece of your pack, Alpha.'
'What is that?' I snapped.
'Our Luna, boy! That is why you have been so emotionally unstable recently! You are twenty-one now and still mateless! Your wolf is getting restless and he will lash out if he does not find his other half soon.'
'Bring two men and meet me in the front of the pack house in ten.' I was mulling the information around in my head.
I needed to find my mate.
