One of the reasons why she has her status is she had created her own breathing style which is a skill that only a haishira can have. Any other reason why she is a pillar is her cruelness to demon giving them no mercy. Ume's full strength is unleashed when working with her elder brother gyutaro. Ume is also quite a crybaby when she can't kill a demon in one go she troughs a temper tantrum and asks her brother for help.
