I hunched over the last box entirely out of breath. "Fuck me!" Remind me to never move again. I threw myself onto my mattress that was practically on the floor.
"We're finally done!" Taylor cheered and sat beside me.
"Now we just have to set up my room and unpack." She groaned beside me and dramatically fainted on top of me. I laughed as I pushed her off. "I'm joking! We can do all that throughout the weekend." She piped up at this.
"Awesome! What's there to eat? I'm starving."
"Let's go downstairs and see." We left out of my room and I peaked my head at my sister's room on the way to the stairs.
"Hey freak!" I yelled into her room and banged my fist on her door. She jumped and her phone flew out of her hands and off the bed. "Uhh huh! You doin something you ain't got no business doing?"
She rolled her eyes and grumbled, "hey Amara. And no, I'm on YouTube." She bent down to pick up her fallen phone. "See?" She huffed as she showed me her phone, which in fact had a YouTube video playing.
"Mhm." was all I said as I closed her door. I always made sure to randomly barge in her room because I could still remember all the things I did on my phone as a 16 year old girl.
Taylor stood at the top of the steps waiting on me. She shook her head and laughed once she saw she had my attention. We reached the first floor and headed to the kitchen. I was surprised to see my mom rummaging in the fridge. She must've came in when Taylor and I took a break from unloading.
"Hey ma!" I maneuvered around the island to give her hug at the fridge. She closed the fridge and threw her arms up. She was a beautiful dark skinned woman that stood at 5'7, medium build. She wore her hair in black and burgundy twists, her favorite hair style. Her pearly straight, white teeth and singular dimple broke across her face as I got closer. She gave me one tight squeeze and held me at arms length.
"Hey baby! I missed you! How have you been? How's School?" Because we were moving around the end of the spring semester I asked my parents if it was ok if I packed later so I could spend time studying. Which resulted in my family moving into the new house and me being at the old house alone. Although it was only five days, I truly missed them.
"I'm good ma! School is going well. I just had my last class of the semester yesterday. So now I just have to study for my last final on Thursday. And I've missed you too mom!" Talking to her made me realize how much I've neglected to keep in touch with them over the course of five days.
"Hey ma!" Taylor said after I was finished talking with my mom. My mom threw her arms open again and engulfed her.
"Hey baby! I haven't seen you in a while. How are you?"
"Good," she said. Taylor always got shy when the spot light was on her. Standing near my mom, the two couldn't be any more opposite. Taylor was as white as they come and considered average height (5'4) and build.
"What's for dinner, Mom?" I pulled out a stool from under the island, hopping on it with a huff. "I'm starving!" I drew out 'g' for extra emphasis.
"Something simple. It's already 4 o'clock." She pointed to the time on the stove and continued, "I was thinking spaghetti."
"Hell yea!" Taylor exclaimed and gave my mom a high five before making her way to the bar stool next to me.
"Glad you're excited." She chuckled and went back to the fridge to gather the ingredients.
Two hours went by and we were well fed and happy. After I placed our dishes in the sink, I began to head up stairs with Taylor in tow. Before I was able to head towards my room, the front door opened.
"Hey Superstar!" My dad yelled and pulled me into a hug. I groaned at the nickname he still calls me even though I'm almost 20 years old. " How've you been?" I give him the same rundown I gave mom because I am feeling the affects of a full stomach.
"I see you ate without me huh?" He leaned in and rubbed his thumb down the side of my lip. He showed me the spaghetti sauce I had neglected to wipe from my face. "SIMBA!" he cried out while he smeared the sauce on my forehead.
"DAD!" My screams were nothing compared to the high pitched squeals of laughter all around me. "I'm going to my room." I pushed passed my sister who had stood at the stairs when she heard dad arrive. I wiped the sauce from my head and rubbed it on my black shirt.
I was officially worn out from all the moving and decided to call it an early night.
"Hey Mara, I'm gonna head home. I'll see you after finals ok?"
By this point I was already in my bed about to take off my saucy shirt and sweats. "Mhm." I mumbled out and gave a wave. I heard my door close faintly and not long after I drifted to sleep.
