Once again, today was a quiet day at the orphanage. The kids were playing outside on the playground. Under the tree near the playground, Sage sat against the tree, reading a book. Even though he was reading his book, he still had an eye on River, who was picking flowers from the garden. Sage noticed that River was making his way towards him. He closed his book and looked up to meet River's ocean blue eyes.

"Who are those for? Sage asked while pointing at the flowers that River was holding.

"There for Sister Ava," River told him with a smile on his face.

Sister Ava was like a mother to them. She always cared for them and was it was her who had raised them when their parents abandoned them both at the orphanage. Sage and River would help her around the orphanage by preparing food for the other orphans, and they would take on the chore of cleaning around the orphanage. They always tried to show her how much they loved her in any shape or form whenever they could.

They walked over to Sister Ava, who was sitting down on a bench keeping a watchful eye on the children. River walked in front of Sister Ava and handed her the flowers he had picked. The flowers were a mix of daisies and daffodils. Sister Ava reached out for them and smiled at him as she raised them to her face so she could smell them.

"They're wonderful. Thank you," Sister Ava said.

"I'm happy you like them." River said, and Sage only smiled.

"Ummm, Sister Ava, I was wondering. Can me and River go to the ice cream store, please?" Sage asked. They were hoping that she would say yes.

"Do you promise you'll be safe? She asked them.

"Yes, ma'am, we will." they both said in unison.

"Okay, I guess you can go. But I want you both here before it gets dark," Sister Ava said with a smile. They both nodded and ran off hand in hand to the ice cream store.

The ice cream store was a few blocks down from the orphanage. So they didn't have to do a lot of walking. They had finally reached the store and walked in. River went to see what flavors they had today.

"What would you like, River? Sage asked him with a soft smile on his face.

"Umm, I'll get chocolate." River told him.

"Okay. I'll get one chocolate and one strawberry ice cream cone, please." Sage told one of the workers, and the worker only nodded in return. River reached in his pocket to grab this money to pay for the ice cream. But Sage reached out his hand to stop him and shook his head.

"Don't worry, I'll pay for it," Sage said. River didn't like it, but he never said anything, knowing very well that it would be useless.

Sage handed the worker the money, and in return, the worker gave them their ice cream. They walked outside the store and kept on walking, both enjoying their treat. It didn't take long for them to finish.

It was starting to get dark, and they were about head back home when something caught River's eye. He walked across the street, up to the store window, and laid out were two pairs of necklaces. They were silver, and one had the letter S, and the other had the letter R. Sage saw the look in River's eyes that he wanted to buy it. It made Sage smile and walk into the store. River stayed outside waiting for Sage while he saw him talking to the store clerk. A few minutes later, Sage walked out and put his hand out towards River. There in his hand was the necklace with the letter S.

"You'll have the one with the letter S, and I'll have the one with the letter R. Is that okay?" he asked River. River only nodded and turned around so Sage could put it on him.

"Now, let's head back home before Sister Ava gets mad and worried," Sage said.

They opened the front gates to the orphanage when they saw Sister Ava standing in front of the doors talking to a man and woman. All three of them turned their heads towards the two kids. River and Sage made their way to Sister Ava and smiled up at her.

"River, this friendly couple would like to adopt you," Ava told him.

"What do you say, River? Do you want to come live with us?" the lady said with a smile.

"Umm, does Sage get to come with us too? River asked them.

"Were afraid not, sweetie. We only came to adopt you." the man said.

"Then I don't want to go with you." River said and grabbed Sage by the hand and pulled him towards the door. But Sage pulled his hand out of River's grasp. River's eyes widened as he looked back at Sage.

"No, River, you have to go with them. Don't you see you'll finally get to have a mom and a dad? Sage said.

"But I want to stay here with you and Sister Ava." River told him, trying to hold back his tears so he wouldn't cry.

Sage wasn't going to allow River to stay here. It was River's opportunity to get a natural feel for a family. So, he had to do what would hurt him and River the most.

"River, if you stay here, then you can forget about our friendship, and I will never forgive you. And you can forget talking to me," Sage said but refused to look at River.

"You don't mean that right." River said in a faint whisper that was barely audible. But Sage didn't say anything, or did he meet River's eyes.

The lady reached out to take River's hand and guided him to their car.

"Come on, honey," she said to River.

It finally clicked into River's head that this might be the last time he might see Sage. River was trying to get out of the woman's grasp. So, he could go back to Sage, where he knew that he belonged. But the man picked him up and carried him.

"Sage!!! Please don't let them take me, Sage!!" River cried out. Tears ran down his face making his vision blurry.

Sage didn't dare look at River and could feel tears about to fall from his eyes. Sage turned his back towards River and decided to walk inside. He left River, yelling out his name. It was for the best, he thought, but one thing was for sure he would never forget those screams. Those screams that begged him not to let them take River away.
