It started out as another day, his face a mask, hiding his real feelings from the world, as he prepared himself for another day of being nice to his future wife, whom he didn't even like, and quarrel with guy he did.  Sadly, even though Yuuki doesn't know she's a pureblood, and the one he's supposed to marry anyway, she took a fancy to him, and makes him unable to use a "I won't force her to marry me if she doesn't want to" excuse. In any case, he has to be nice to her until she awakens as a pureblood, and he has to make his sad predicament a reality. In the meantime, he has to keep himself from showing how much her attempts to make him fall in love with her sicken him, and pretend not to know she fancies herself the future Vampire Queen, despite the fact he never told her she actually supposed to be the future Vampire Queen, and has nothing past a few friendly 'hellos'  to base the idea on.

On the other hand, Zero, the guy he really was in love with, hated him, and Kaname had to keep it that way so he would be able to go through with his duty to marry Yuuki, but it was hard. Zero would always put on a brave front, and he was the best fighter Kaname knew, but he was actually sweet, innocent, and had an intoxicaing smell, and it was adorable how emotionally insecure he actually was because he became a vampire. He was also cute, especially when he pouted, his every movement was full of grace, and he was handsome, with his amethyst eyes, and silver hair framing his delicate pale face that was so feminine, it hid his real strength. Truthfully, Zero was everything Yuuki wasn't in Kaname's eyes, so he could never love her, but never be with the person he really loved.

At least, that was the situation up until a week ago when things started to change because he recieved a letter from his cousin,  who just became a father a few nights ago, asking if he was okay with his son being his heir when he became Vampire King, since he recalled that even though Kaname was good with kids without even trying, he didn't particularly like them, and once said that he would never actually want one. Kaname didn't think the council would accept the idea*, but with his small hope he had sent them a letter relaying what his cousin said about an heir, because if he had an heir, then there would be no reason to marry Yuuki for one, but he doubted he could get out of the marriage so easily. It took them a week of meetings in which they argued, and checked the kid's parentage to find out if he really was a pureblood, before they they finally came to a decision.

Kaname was expecting the worst when he opened up their reply, and was ready to accept their denial, because he hadn't even allowed himself to hope for anything else, but as he slowly read through the letter, and let his shocked mind process what the letter was saying he soon found himself grinning wildly, with his brain reeling with hope, and possiblities he hadn't allowed himself to feel until now. The letter more or less stated that if he was fine accepting the kid as an heir, then he didn't have to marry Yuuki afterall, unless he really was in love with her and/or wanted another kid to act as a back-up in case something happened to the kid (which had been named Charles) who would be his heir. In the end, they even highly recomended he marry someone other than Yuuki simply because it would be a good idea to have two strong leaders to keep order, when his ideas of peace between vampires and humans, make some vampire want to revolt. Besides it was highly unlikely, something would happen to Charles that would require another heir, since he would be surrounded by guards.

He was so stunned he no longer had to marry Yuuki, that he was in a daze when he left the night-class dorm. Seeing Zero didn't help. He no longer needed to be cold to him. He could finally become friends, and, dare he say it, lovers. Kaname suppressed a chuckle at Zero's dark aura that sent some of the girls running without him doing anything, he looked so cute! But why was he holding the fangirls from the day-class back by himself? He was certainly capable, but why wasn't Yuuki doing her job? Oh well, he didn't care, he kept walking, but discreetly watched Zero, thinking of ways to make him forgive him for being so nasty towards him all these years.

At least, he watched Zero until Yuuki called out, "Hello Kaname" with a shy smile on her face that really didn't suit her.

"Hello little Yuuki," He decided that until he got his thoughts in order as to how he wanted to treat Yuuki now, he wouldn't be cold to her just yet, "aren't you going to help Zero?"

"Well I would..." She trailed off. Oh god, just finish your sentence, did she really think he liked it when she did that? Well she didn't really have to finish it, he could see for himself.

"...well, if you understand, then shoo!"  Zero sent the rest of them all running, even though he wasn't really angry. He absently nodded to tell Yuuki he understood what she meant, even if he really didn't. They were still there when she went over to talk to him, and she could have been helping then.

"Well, um, bye!" Yuuki ran off, looking back once, at who knows what, but it was enough to snap him out of his staring. Didn't  Zero know how amazing he looked in his school uniform, or how tempting it was to make him his with his neck and chest so exposed? All kaname would really have to do is take some of Zero's blood and he would have to stay by his side forever because it would create a blood bond. However, he didn't want to do that,  Zero wouldn't be happy, and he didn't want to force him to like him.

"Hello Zero,"

Zero looked back at him and hmphed, before trudging off without saying anything. Kaname watched him leave, his face not showing what he was feeling, but after Zero was out of sight, he sighed. This was going to take a while.
