Turning 18 was suppose to be a milestone, a turning point that would change everything. And it did-but not the way I had imagined.
As a Kunoichi my life had always revolved around intense training and countless missions. Combat and Stealth were my world. The only escape I had was books. After gruelling days spend in the field or the training ground, I would slip away in the academy's vast library or curl up in my room, diving into stories until sleep felt over me.
The academy's library is a forte of knowledge , with shelves lines with ancient tomes from across the world. Recently, I've been drawn to a particular book - a record of The Demon Slayer Corps, detailing the legendary pillars who stand against the tide of darkness. One name leapt from the pages: Uzui Tengen, the flamboyant Sound Pillar, known for his lager-than-life presence, his confidence and his extraordinary skill.
What truly caught my attention was his life beyond the battlefield. Tengen has three wives, all Kunoichis like myself-Hinatsuru, Makio and... Suma
That name. My heart skipped a beat.
Suma... I know her. I couldn't place it at first, but my memories began to unfurl in my mind. I was there the day she left with him.
A Shinobi, unlike any I had ever seen. White hair, crimson eyes and an aura that radiated power. The day he walked away with Suma, he glanced at me-just for a friction of a second, but in that single moment, I felt his gaze pierced right through me, as if he was searching for something deep inside, something hidden and unknown even to me.It was unlike any other stare I have ever felt. It wasn't just intimidating-it was all-consuming. His eyes looked onto mine and for that fleeting moment, I felt exposed, as he could see every corner of my soul, every secret I held. And then, just as suddenly, he turned away. The connection snapped, leaving me standing there, frozen, my mind racing with a strange mix of awe and fear.
I stood rooted to the spot long after he disappeared with Suma. My body remained still but inside I was a storm of question and unease. Who was he? How could a single glance form a stranger leave me feeling so vulnerable, more than any enemy I had ever faced, not even the demons I've fought could make me feel so defenceless.
Since the day, he has haunted my thoughts. I tied to forget him, but no matter how hard I trained, how many missions I completed, his gaze lingered in the back of my mind, a shadow that wouldn't fade.
It was that unsettling feeling that pushed me harder, drove me to train with a ferocity I never knew I had. I refused to be caught off guard like that ever again, to feel that powerless again. There was something in his eyes, something that saw too much-and I couldn't let that happen again.
