The prison days went by one after the other. The same food, the same cell, the same prisoners. I was attacked every day but the overseers didn't care one bit. I was in the infirmary more than I was in my cell. I started to recognize the nurses better than the guards that I worked with before my imprisonment. The overseers would eat and lounge in their private box everyday to watch the arena matches. The arena fights happened so that desperate prisoners that had their rations taken away would compete for rewards. Some even used it to gain extra privileges and live a luxurious prison life, if that was even possible in a prison. Meanwhile the losers either gave up rations, took on the winners work, or had to submit to him or her for a month. I once tried to participate for less work, but I lost terribly to one of the luxury prisoners. As punishment I had to clean the toilets for a week. Afterwards I never tried again. The overseers used this as entertainment in the otherwise boring prison. So the days went by in almost the exact same way. Until the new head overseer arrived. He cracked down on the inter-prisoner violence and required all quarrels to be settled in the arena which was now a separate part of the complex, complete with elevated seats and sand floors. Also the fighters who used the arena as a source of luxury now could only fight a set amount of times a month. All who broke any of his new rules was subsequently thrown into the "Special Ward". Rumor has it that those thrown in were subject to intense experiments. No one ever came out. The head overseer himself was nothing special except for his huge pearly wings. Every month we would gather in the arena and he would fly around repeating the rules and consequences with the other overseers in tow. Every so often a prisoner or two would heal their wings and be allowed to fly for one day, then their wings would be wounded again and they would not be allowed to fly until they healed. For some reason my wings could not be damaged so they just used giant weights to prevent me from flying, whilst adding a larger difference between me and the other prisoners.
I only made one friend his name was Remoros he was in the cell next to mine so we were grouped together often, like me he was a former guard that was thrown in prison for unintentionally bringing a disease into the prison that killed 326 inmates along with 134 of the prison staff. Though he is responsible for 460 deaths he is a pretty nice guy he helped me out a lot and didn't seem to care that I always had huge weights chained to my wings or that I attracted a lot of unwanted attention. He joked around a lot and was always playing pranks on the guards. He was the only thing that kept me from insanity. Then one day he disappeared, he didn't come to lunch or the yard like we talked about only the day before. I thought Remoros was playing a prank on me until I went back to my cell. I decided to take a look at his cell to see if he was OK, but he wasn't there. Neither were all of his belongings or his picture of his wife that he always kept in his cell. Then I started to worry "Why isn't he here? Where is he? Was he sent to the special ward?" These questions raced through my mind as I went back to my cell. I lay on my bed trying to reassure myself, telling myself he couldn't possibly go the the "Special Ward". He didn't do anything to deserve it. As I thought I took a quick glance at the large clock outside only to see it was 12:00 AM! I had been in my bed for 7 hours thinking. At this point I was freaking out " it's been 7 hours and I still haven't managed to convince myself that Remoros was fine!" I was a wreck, I was sweating and my heart was beating like I had almost been hit with a spear. Then I heard the cell door unlocking. There was a tall guard in my doorway, sword in hand. He was going to make me come, whether I wanted to or not.
