An exhausted sigh escaped Aelin's lips as she watched her unconscious father lay on the hospital bed. She hated this. She hated being in a hospital. The beeping of the EKG stressed her out way more than it should. The pungent scent of antiseptics and disinfectants covered the room making it nauseating to be in. hospitals always made her feel unnecessarily distressed; from the sounds of the machines, the sound of doctors and nurses tramping through the eerily long hallways to the bickering and the wails of families and friends in distress. Hospitals are where contradicting things can meet at the same place; life and death, happiness and sadness or pain and pleasure. Aelin could never get used to seeing her father lay unconscious on the bed with all those wires hooked up like he was a fish caught in a net. Aelin looked outside the window to see a full moon illuminating the sky. She couldn't help but admire the moon as it was glimmering in the dark night. 'It was beautiful.' she thought to herself.

Her thoughts were interrupted by loud chatters coming from outside of the room. It seemed like someone was crying uncontrollably. Curious, she got up from the arm chair that she was on and dawdled out of the room. Outside, at the end of the hallway, a bunch of teenagers her age were gathered up in front of the operating room. The room that most people dreaded. The room that always had families and friends waiting anxiously outside.

Aelin stared at the commotion as she saw a bunch of badly beaten up guys waiting nervously outside of the room. All of them looked as if they had just survived a natural disaster. She wondered if they had gotten into a crash or were badly beaten up. Everyone seemed to be completely disheveled and tensed except one guy who stood out. He had middle length blonde hair and wore a soaked teal blue outfit. His entire appearance was a mess. Whatever had happened, his clothes had clearly been dragged through dirt and soaked in rain. His blonde hair was dripping wet from the rain. His face had a few bruising here and there. Aelin could tell that those bruises seemed painful, but this guy stood out because he was calm and collected compared to everyone else. Or at least, that's what it seemed like from an outsider's perspective.

While everyone was whimpering in distress, he carefully sauntered in front of everyone, with his collected demeanor and mumbled just loudly enough for everyone to hear, "He's not gonna die here. He promised me... that we'd rule the world together." With that said he turned towards his friends and flashed an encouraging smile.

Despite his appearance, he seemed to be the centre of attention and an important figure as his words seemed to calm the commotion and tension between his friends.

"Believe in Ken-chin." The guy continued with a smile on his face. From a far, Aelin stared at his smile and wondered if it was a genuine smile.

Being someone who always had to smile in tough situations, Aelin couldn't help but assume that his smile was a lie. His smile that seemed to calm his friends seemed sorrowful to her. She was way too familiar with that.

Not wanting to further creep up on them by watching them, Aelin walked backed into her father's room and sat across the window staring back at the comforting moon. Little did she know, fatigue started to hit her and she found herself gradually dozing off to the silent night.

Aelin was awakened by a sudden crash that startled her. This time it came from the room above her. Startled, she looked around the room to see if everything was alright and to her relief everything was in place. Father was still unconscious on the bed and nothing unexpected had happened. Perhaps something bad happened to the person above. Regardless, she didn't want to think of it and found herself making her way out of the room. She glanced at the end of the hallway to see if the people she saw earlier were still there, but they weren't.

Uninflected, Aelin made her way out of the hospital building to catch some fresh air. As soon as she stepped out, a rush of cool wind blew through her making her feel as though she had just been reborn. The wind seemed to have picked up her sorrows and discarded it elsewhere. Relieved, she walked around the hospital building admiring the chilly night. She was also glad that she decided to wear not one but two jackets. Roaming around the building with her hands in her pockets was comforting to her. Aelin didn't necessarily like being alone but it was a lot better than being cramped up in a hospital room.

Somewhere along the pleasant walk, a soft-muffled cry stops her in her tracks. It was a male. Barely audible but she could tell that the cries were stifled as if the person was trying their best to suppress their emotions. Conscientiously, Aelin tip toed towards the source and saw a teenage boy crouched up by the wall with both his hands covering his clearly flushed face. He was crying.

To her surprise, it was the same boy that she saw in front of the operating room. Earlier he looked charismatic, dependable and composed. Now Aelin was looking at someone who seemed tired, heartbroken and dispirited. Normally she would make her way back and ignore it but for some reason she wanted to console this stranger whom she has never met.

"Thank goodness Ken-chin. Don't make me worry like that you asshole." He muttered. Aelin noted that his voice was soft but coated with sorrow.

Although, Aelin despised eavesdropping on other people, Aelin was relieved to know that whoever this guy was worried about had made it through surgery.

For a whole minute, she pondered back and forth whether or not she should approach this stranger. A part of her understood that sometimes people just want to be left alone but another- stronger part of her wanted to approach him.

Not wanting to have regrets, Aelin slowly approached him.

Immediately, he notices and stiffened up. Within seconds, he had completely dried up his tears. Surprised by how quickly he noticed her presence, Aelin nervously uttered "hey... sorry if this comes off nosy but I was just walking and accidentally heard you..." internally, Aelin was dumbfounded by her own words but continued to speak.

"I know I am a stranger to you, but I was in the room across the hallway when I saw you and your friends. I don't know who you are but you seem like you're carrying a lot on your shoulders... I'm no expert but I know that sometimes confiding to a stranger can help." Aelin's voice got quieter as she cautiously walked closer towards his crouched figure and sat next to him.

Instantly she was stunned by how cold the ground was. The air itself was chilly enough and sitting on the ground didn't help with the cold. 'This guy is crazy for sitting out here in the cold without a jacket' she thought.

The guy didn't move nor utter a word to Aelin. He just sat there with the same composed demeanor that she saw earlier when he was in front of his group of friends. She wondered where the emotions she saw earlier disappeared off to.

"Your friend... he made it right?" Aelin asked timidly wanting to break the uncomfortable silence.

"yeah." It was just one word but his voice struck her. She liked it.

"I'm glad," she responded back with a soft smile. This time he glanced at her and Aelin couldn't help but feel intimidated by his gaze. After all, this was a pretty good looking stranger.

"You had a lot of friends back there, why don't you go and talk to them rather than sit here alone." This guy seemed like someone who would bottle up his emotions and put on a strong demeanor in front of his friends.

He didn't respond back and Aelin immediately apologized if it was too nosy of her. He shrugged off her apology and said "I'll be alright. Thank you." flashing off another sweet but sorrowful smile.

Aelin sat there dumbfounded, how on Earth does this guy go from bawling his eyes out to flashing one of the most wholesome smiles she has ever seen. Not wanting to invade his privacy any further, Aelin got up from the cold concrete floor and took off one of her jackets.

Confused by her actions, the guy quietly observes her as Aelin gently placed her jacket around his shoulders. In a response to her perplexing action, he slightly tilts his head like a confused puppy. Aelin involuntary lets out a subtle laugh.

"You shouldn't be sitting out here in the cold with your drenched clothes. You're going to get sick. Keep the jacket and don't worry about it," Aelin smiled at him before making her way back into the hospital.

Before leaving, she added, "oh my name's Aelin by the way. Send your friend my good wishes." she waved him a final goodbye and made her way back into the dreaded hospital room.

Back in the hospital room, Aelin cast her mind back to the conversation she had with the guy. It was a short conversation but Aelin couldn't stop replaying the moment in her head.
