Prologue

-----------

I careened through the forest, the pack hot my heels, with Aarwi breathing down my neck. With a mighty howl Aarwi leapt onto me, he pinned me beneath his huge, muscled, grey body. I struggled but Aarwi simply dug his claws into my throat. "You insolent pup! How dare you challenge me and run when you have lost?!" He growled, his snout inches from my face. His breathe was rank and I struggled not to cough. I turned my head to the side, looking pleadingly into the eyes of the other pack members, but even my once closest friends turned away.

I guess that I hadn't really thought the challenge through, I guess that I hadn't questioned my insane actions. No one had ever even come close to beating Aarwi in a challenge, not even the strongest wolf in the pack. And I? A skinny under-fed omega? How did I think that I would have a chance? But what other choice did I have? He was going to kill Mali.

If you want to hear my story, we're going to have to go back in time, to many years ago to when I was a pup, destined for alpha-hood. Before Aarwi took over, before I knew who Mali was, and back when every thing was peaceful.
