Megan groaned, rolling from her side and up off the cold floor she had been dispensed in. She sat up struggling against the intenseness of the moment. She felt disoriented from the sudden movement, clutching her head in pain. Confused as to where and what had happened to her that had caused her the massive migraine she was experiencing. She gagged on the floor, nausea making her dizzy and unable to breath freely. Thankfully, nothing followed the sounds as she clutched her stomach and head uncomfortably. With a sharp gasp, the memory of Annie's call, and the fraud police officer’s swift capture came flooding back into her mind.
“Oh fuck...shit. I..where am I?” She spoke out loud, the comfort in at least recognizing her own voice was minimum.
She sat against a wall. The room was pitch black and she couldn’t make head nor tails of anything inside of it. Her words had echoed in the room slightly, making her contend that wherever she was, the place was big enough to accommodate far more than one person. Her heart beat quickly within her chest, the thudding sound reaching her head as she tried to rise slowly. Grasping the wall to help keep her stable she ran her hand up along it, feeling for anything that could identify the room. But Meg had no luck.
She crab walked the perimeter of her prison, slowly inching her way within it. The darkness was so intense she found herself squinting for anything that might ignite a little recognition or light. Again no luck. She did realize quickly enough once meeting another wall, that there was a slight draft coming from above her head. She wasn’t sure where from because she couldn’t see it, but waving her hand high above her head, the small breeze touched the tips of her fingers.
“What is this place?” She spoke out loud, hoping for some explanation or anything really to happen. Almost as if by miracle, she heard the sudden sound of shuffling, at a distance. And then, a voice came from across the room.
“Hello...is someone there?” The voice sounded muffled as though it was coming from the otherside of a wall.
Meg stretched her arms out in front of her and walked slowly forward, her hands fairly quickly meeting the wall before her. It felt cold to the touch and smooth as glass, nothing like that sand like the cement wall she had woken against. She swallowed hard, nervously speaking. “Hello, I’m here...who are you?”
Silence met her ears for what felt like eternity. For a second, she feared the person couldn’t speak or had been a part of her imagination. The silence was not at all easy to ignore, but a minute later a female spoke across her end.
“Annie!!!I’m Annie. Oh my God, Meg is that you?”
Recognition met Meg’s own ears at the sound of the kidnapped young woman who had first called for her help hours ago. Or at least she hoped it had only been hours. Time was not easy to tell inside the cell of pitch darkness. She pressed herself closer to the wall, as though doing so would bring Annie closer.
“Yes, yes it’s me. Meg.” Tears welled in the corners of her eyes as she laid both her hands against the glass, wishing at least for Annie to be within reach. The fear of darkness and being alone brought an awareness to the fact that she was now as lost and out of reach as Annie had been when she had been kidnapped.
Recognizing the fact that the young girl was now in the same predicament, Annie rose from her cell’s floor and leaned against the glass well, cringing as she did so because of the chain around her ankle. The kidnapper had added the extra security after Annie had stolen the phone and called Meg. He then took the cell phone from her and tied her against the wall, with very little room for much movement. Ignoring the cutting edge of metal on her ankle, Annie spoke against the glass, a new found terror filling her at the sound of the young woman in the other room.
