To say that Karan was disappointed would be an understatement. The drills today had been the worst he had witnessed, and it was all he could do to reign his tempter in. Even Faizi was getting bothered by the less than satisfactory performances, and it took a lot for him to get mad. In all honesty, Karan wasn't as mad at the cadets as he was at himself. As their trainer, it was his job to make sure they evolve into brilliant commandos, and if they failed, it reflected on him.
He leaned against the roof balcony, ignoring the blabbering of Sanju and Faizi behind him who were getting drunker by the minute. If they showed up hungover in the morning again, Karan promised himself that he's gonna scream in their ear. Glaring at the stars that twinkled, he questioned his own methods and talent, wondering how he could do better.
"Janab ji, aa jao na. Kyun taaron ko dara rahe ho?" Faizi asked, his voice a little slurred. Karan looked over his shoulder and resisted the urge to flip him off.
"Tu he pee. Mai yahan akele soch raha hun Batra sir ko kaise bataun ki unhone jo mission hume diya hai usme hum fail ho gae hain." Karan said, and Sanju lowered her glass hearing this. She wobbled on her feet before crossing over to Karan, mimicking his pose.
"Sir ji, katai bekar cadet mile hain humko."
Karan scoffed and shook his head. "Nahi yaar, vo toh normal civilians hain. Unhe hamare jaise banana humari responsibility hai. And we have all failed."
Listening to Karan, Sanju and Faizi start sobering up. The three commandos sit in silence together, musing over the mission that had been trusted in their hands.
"Aisa na hai sir ji ki inme sahas na hai. Je log apne andar ka fauji jante he na hain." Sanju said.
Karan nodded, wondering if he needed to change some tactics on how to get his cadets to realize their true caliber. Yes, he was hard on them. But he was also proud of how brave and fearless they have been in taking up this training. It wasn't just a mission for Batra sir anymore. It was his duty towards these patriots who wanted to serve the nation.
"Yaar, agar inhe koi apne jaise role model mil jae na, toh shayad ye inspire ho jae." Faizi said. "Matlab, think about it. Ye sab civilians hain. Agar ye aise kisi insaan se milein jo civilian se commando bana, toh they will think they can do the same."
Something in Faizi's voice had Karan's hackles rising. He chanced a look at his best friend who had a teasing grin on his face. They stared at each other, Karan's eyes widening in horror.
"Bilkul bhi nahi. Apne ghatia idea apne pass rakh!" He scowled. Faizi started giggling while Sanju stood by confused.
"Ka hua sir ji, humko toh kuch samajh na aaya."
Karan started shaking his head. "Nahi nahi, bilkul nahi. Faizi, tu mera dost hai ki dushman?"
"Janab, aapka dost toh hun he, lekin unn cadets ka trainer bhi hun. Sirf ek vo he hai jo inn logon ko inspire kar sakti hai ab." Faizi said.
"Koi humko bataega ke ho raho hai?" Sanju snapped and Karan and Faizi glanced at her, one in helpless frustration and the other in elation.
"Arre, tu kaise bhool gai. Tum dono toh beheno ki tarha close thi." Faizi said.
And then it clicked to Sanju. Of course, there was only one civilian they knew who they had seen brave this training and become a Special Agent. Sanju started smiling too.
"Puppy?" She exclaimed. "Faizi sir ji, kya kamal ka idea diye hain. Usse bula lete hain! Kyun, Karan Sir ji?"
Karan was now glaring at Sanju too. Of course, she would want her back too. After all, they were the only two female agents at that time.
"Dekho, mai decision nahi le sakta. Kewal Batra sir bata sakte hain." Karan said.
"Mai kya bata sakta hun?"
The three agents turned on their spot and came to attention. Batra sir was standing at the entrance to the roof, smiling at his disheveled and slightly drunk commandos.
"Sir!" They greeted, standing on their tips.
"Arre bhai, tum log yahan daru party kar rahe ho aur bataya bhi nahi?" Batra joked and Faizi cracked a smile.
"Bas sir, it's been a long day. Aiye na, hume vaise bhi aapse kuch puchna tha."
Batra sir sits with them and the three nudge each other to start conversation. Finally, Karan spoke.
"Sir, with your permission, hum iss mission me ek aur special agent ko shamil karna chahenge."
Faizi and Sanju nodded. "Yes sir."
"Kisko shamil karna chahte ho?" Batra sir asked.
Before Karan could speak, Faizi interrupted him. "Puppy ko!"
Karan rolled his eyes and pretended to not know either of his friends. Trust them to embarrass him in front of his seniors.
"Ye Puppy kaun hai bhai?" Batra sir asked, amused. Unlike Karan, his sense of humor did not die in a ditch.
"Y/N Y/L/N." Karan said, and the name still inspired shivers down his back. It had been a while since he had spoken her name, but if he was being honest with himself, he had never quite stopped thinking about her.
Batra sir's eyes lit up at the name. Oh, how he missed her. Just like the three before him, she too had been like a daughter to him.
"Arre, ye toh bahut achha idea hai. Vo cadets ko kaafi inspiration de sakti hai. Vaise bhi, kitna waqt ho gaya usse mile. Issi wajah se reunion bhi ho jaega."
Karan was hoping Batra sir would say no, but of course, as always, the universe hated him. Things never went his way. If he could ever meet god, he had some choice words to say to him.
"Yes sir. Mai kal he Special Agent Y/N se contact kar leta hun." He promised.
Nodding, Batra sir started leaving. Suddenly, he stopped and turned again.
"Ye batao, Y/N ko tum log Puppy kyun bulate ho?" He asked and Sanju and Faizi started smiling.
"Sir, aap toh usse jante hain na. Sabse alag type ki ladki hai. Usne apna ye naam khud he rakha tha. Voh kehti thi ki Jahan bhi vo jati thi, wahan sab usse gaaliyan dete hain. 'You're a bitch'. 'Kutiya' etc. Isliye usne apna naam he Puppy rakh liya. Boli, gaali bhi ho gai and cute nickname bhi."
Hearing this, Batra sir started chuckling. Of course she would do something like this. He was surprised that it hasn't occurred to him yet to include Y/N in this mission. She was perfect for it.
"Chalo, ab raat kaafi ho gai hai. Aap sab bhi so jaiye. And Karan, kal Y/N se baat karke batana mujhe vo kab tak aaegi."
They all wished him good night and he left. Sanju looked at her beer and pouted before throwing it away. Waving to the guys she went to her room too, leaving Karan and Faizi alone.
Karan knew even before he looked at Faizi that his best friend was going to be an insufferable idiot. To no one's surprise, Faizi was wearing a grin so mischievous that Karan was sure it was illegal to laugh like this in atleast 17 countries.
"Ye bandar ki tarhan kya hass raha hai sale." He grumbled and Faizi laughed.
"Janab, aaj tak sirf Puppy he hai jo aapki barabari kar pai hai. Kal se toh bhot maza aane wala hai yahan."
With that, Faizi too left, the sounds of his whispering lingering behind. Karan stood alone under the dark sky, a muffled curse escaping him. As if life wasn't complicated enough. He closed his eyes and shook his head. Her face. He could never forget it.
"Puppy." He whispered.
She would be the death of him. He knew that.
