What is it about seeing someone after so long that makes the butterflies in your stomach dance? He wanted to rush out to see her, to see if he remembered the details of her curves of her smile correctly, but a large part of him also wanted to stay hidden. Looking at her after their time apart, Karan was afraid he'd never stop looking. But his heart made the decision for him, feet carrying over to where others were crowding around the one person who never truly left his mind.

His eyes rowed over you, fluttering as they took you in. Eyes lingering over your features, watching the way your eyes glittered as you hugged Sanju, it made his heart beat faster. It had been a few years since you were this close to him, and his hands twitched as if aching to feel you close again.

"Arre Karan, wahan kya kar rahe ho. Aake miloge nahi?" Faizi called, and Karan swallowed thickly before coming closer. You turned to face him, a smile curving wide and Karan swore his heart stopped beating for a moment.

"Shergil!" You exclaimed, voice still that mix of command and mischief that had often labeled you a troublemaker. Before he could say more, you were enveloping him in a warm hug, and his arms followed absently. Cozy, warm, perfect. You always were to him. "Kaisa hai?"

He mumbled something before clearing his throat, clenching his fists tight to stop himself from reaching out to you again. "Thank you, Puppy. Itne short notice pe aane ke liye."

You rolled your eyes. "Yahi problem hai teri. Har time itna formal kyun?"

Karan shrugged and then you were pulled into a conversation with Batra sir. Your eyes flickered back to him, and you winked. Karan's fist clenched tight, teeth gritting with an effort to stay calm. Only you made him feel equal parts murderous and lovesick.

"Thoda aur zor se ghoor lo, ghoorne pe koi tax nahi hai. Varna picture kheench dete hain tumhare liye." Faiza teased next to him. Karam blinked away from you and grabbed Faizi's arm, dragging him away.

"Kamine, ye toh kal aane wali thi na. Aaj kaise aa gai?" Karan asked, thoroughly unprepared to see you.

"Janab, mujhpe kyun gussa ho rahe ho. Bandi se pucho kaise jaldi aa gai."

A great flurry of emotions swirled in his head. The last time he had seen you...It hadn't ended on great terms. But the emotions...they never left. With or without your presence, you had always haunted his life.

"Yaar Faizi, iske saath drills me tu he jaega. Mai ni." Yes, he was now pouting like a kid.

"Kyun? Tumhe kis baat ka dar hai?" Faizi asked, circling him. "Tumhe kya lagta hai, agar tum iske saath rahe, tumhe firse isse pyaar ho jaega?"

His eyes closed and he turned away from his best friend, memories better kept repressed assaulting his mind with a fervor.

"Janab, firse pyaar usse hota hai jisse pyaar karna kabhi chhoda ho." Faizi said, ever the philosopher. "Abhi kismat ne ek aur mauka diya hai. Ab isse jane nahi dena."

Saying this, Faizi left Karan alone with his thoughts. All his thoughts were filled with you.

(Your pov)

You found him on the terrace, the cool breeze ruffling his hair. It was longer than you remembered. Funny, how this man seemed to have completely changed and yet not at all. Having changed out of your training gear into fresh clothes, you wandered by him and sat beside him.

"Avoid kar rahe ho mujhe?" You asked, hair still damp from your shower.

"Nahi toh."

Saala Jhoota. You had known him for years. Rag rag se vakhif ho iski.

"I like your cadets." You said, waving your legs over the edge. "They remind me a little of myself. Thode se lazy, thode se confused. Lots of passion."

At this Karan cracked a smile, his eyes meeting yours for the first time since you sat next to him. Chocolate brown eyes. Prettiest pair in this town.

"Tumhare jaise bilkul nahi hain." Karan said, fidgeting with his hands. "Tum toh Jahan jati thi kaand kar aati thi."

"Arre oh mister, what the hell?" You asked with a smile, knocking your shoulder into his. "I was a perfectly good little soldier. Cute si cadet thi."

Karan looked at you again as if wanting to say something, but then evasively looked away. You pulled out a packet of lays and offered some to him, munching along.

"Tum jaldi kaise aa gai? Kal aane wali thi na." Karan said and flipped your hair behind dramatically.

"Jan bujhkar aai. Mujhe pata tha mujhe dekhte he tujhe heart attack aa jaega, and tujhe pareshan karna toh meri favorite hobby hai."

He laughed, and it was a sound so rich and lovely you couldn't help but be enchanted. "Tum haste hue ne ekdum handsome lagte ho. Thoda khul ke has liya karo, I promise the world won't end if you do."

"Trainer hun, zyada hasunga toh cadets bigad jaenge." Karan said.

"Mere bhi toh trainer the, mere saath toh khoob haste the." You retorted.

Oh, you remembered those days. You had done more than just laugh together. On some levels it was unethical for you to have gotten involved with your trainer, but your emotions had never interfered with your duty. Karan was a large part in making you the woman and commander you were today, and for that you will always be grateful to him.

"Toh, any observations?" He asked.

"Zyada kuch ni, ek he din hua hai abhi toh. Kal chalo saath drills pe, batati hun sab."

You got up and made to move away, tucking the empty chips wrapper in your pocket to throw away later.

"Kahan ja rahi ho?" He asked, and you looked at him from over your shoulder. How many nights had the both of you spent like this all those years?

"Ek dost se milne. Wait kar rahe hoga vo mera."

You saw the way his jaw clenched, and you registered the bitter smugness in your gut at the action. Shergil could get insanely jealous in the past, and it seemed like he was the same today. Without clarifying more, you made your way down and away from him.
