Caffeine is a drug that is naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. It's also produced artificially and added to certain foods. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system, causing increased alertness. Caffeine gives most people a temporary energy boost and elevates mood.

“Adelie! Pay attention!”

A big part of me knew that I should have been paying attention to Mr. Lake instead of drifting off into thoughts of Craig. I just couldn’t help it. It was the single most exciting thing that had ever happened to me up to that point in my life. I am used to being at the bottom of the social pyramid. It was my choice, I don’t like socializing. This is because all anyone ever did after the accident was shuffle around nervously. I know they talked about it behind my back so why couldn’t they come up with anything to say to my face?

I think I handled it quite well. My studies became my life. I dove into a world of reading, writing, watching films. It’s nice. But Craig changed things somehow. In the middle of my favorite class I was thinking about how he hadn’t called instead of Lord of the Flies. I was consumed by thoughts of him and now Mr. Lake was calling me back from my happy Craig land.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Lake.” I could feel my face get hot. I hate getting in trouble. He gave me a sympathetic smile and got back to talking about ‘Biblical Parallels’.

He’s here. I thought that I would notice if a boy that looks like that went to my school but I didn’t. Until now. He was standing around with some other boys in front of the lockers. He caught me by surprise, of course. I would have never imagined that he goes to school here. It’s a big school, sure, but I was convinced that everyone here had heard about my situation. He showed no recognition or awkwardness when we met. Besides, he lives in Woodbury. There’s a private school there. It didn’t cross my mind that he might not go to the Woodbury private school.

I frowned as I came to the realization that if he didn’t call it was because he wasn’t interested. I promptly spun around and took a step in the opposite direction.

“Adelie?”

I winced but kept walking, pretending that I didn’t hear him calling.

“Adelie!” He called. It was a lot louder now.

I had to stop. I didn’t want to be mean to him. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t like a damaged awkward girl. In all honesty, I wouldn’t like me if I met me. I turned around slowly and pretended to be surprised.

“Hey,” He spoke in a soft voice.

“Hi.” I squeaked. My hands were trembling and sweating profusely. I hid them behind my back and wished desperately that he would vanish.

“How are you, girl? Why didn’t you tell me that you go here?”

“Ah, I…” I took a deep breath. “Why didn’t you?”

My own words surprised me. It was like someone else had spoken them. To me it sounded like something a confident heroine from one of my novels would say.

“I didn’t know you went here too.” He laughed and I could tell that I caught him by surprise as well.

“Well now you know.” I blurted. My mouth was on a roll. My eyes widened, how could I be speaking so freely? Because he doesn’t know what you did, a little voice inside me replied. I ignored it.

“Yes I do.” His eyes sparkled. He stared at me for awhile. Whether it was in amazement or disgust, I didn’t know.

“Do you want to go out for coffee?” He urged me with his smile.
